Coaches in new football league disagree on scheduling

Opinions differ on how to schedule the new 10-team Downriver League, but every coach agrees breaking up the Mega Conference to form this geographically-friendly league was the correct decision.

Bob Czarnecki is entering his 19th season as head coach at Trenton and said he's looking forward to competing against teams in his own backyard.

"It's something we should have done years ago," he said.

Back to the schedule. League administrators decided every team would play a nine-game league schedule leaving no open dates for a non-league opponent. Allen Park...

What would be your Downriver Area Top 5 for 2009? I have not done a lot of research .... what do you think ...

#1. Inkster
#2. Fordson

That's where I'm a little stumped...
I think if the Fordson young guys step up at some of the skill positions ... they could end up #1.

Who is the Downriver area top 5? Who should be in the mix?

Word has it Inkster will travel to Ohio to play the Big Reds of Steubenville ..... I'm not sure which week this game will be... nor can I confirm it.

Steubenville was (14-1) last season and lost in Ohio's DIV title game.

Steubenville has a dual-threat QB (Dwight Macon) with an offer from Toledo ... after throwing for over 2,400 and rushing for 850 yards as a junior ... something tells me he'd be a big time prospect if he were 6-4 instead of 5-10.

I'm sure that will be a tough one for Inkster ... especially having to travel to Ohio to play.

Dearborn, Heights high schools form new sports league with Redford

DEARBORN/DEARBORN HEIGHTS - The three Dearborn public high schools, plus Annapolis and Crestwood in Dearborn Heights, are joining several other schools to form a new athletic league, which should keep competitions closer to home.

Eight area high schools are pulling out of the Michigan MEGA conference to form their own league, according to Jeff Bartold, District 7 superintendent.

Besides Annapolis, the high schools include Crestwood, Dearborn, Edsel Ford, Fordson, Garden City, Redford Union and Thurston.

The new conference still needs an official name, but for now it is being called the Northern Suburban League.

"The new league is based on locations and the sport offerings they have," Bartold said.

All the schools are within about seven miles of each other,...

Read about the Highland park situation in the paper, does not sound good... Anyone have a thought or a better source then the freep? And how will this help some mega teams make the playoffs.
Personally, I am glad the coach was backed by his school to hold his student-athletes accountable for their actions, sometimes we forget the playing football is a privilege not a right!

Allen Park vs. Southgate

I will be at the game tomorrow and it's sure to be chilly and a great autumn night for a huge showdown. Even though Allen Park is wounded and losers of two straight, this still promises to be a slugfest. Also the Titans still will have to deal with the fact that they might just be the better team, but still respect what Allen Park is. Allen Park is wounded and should be as dangerous as ever as they'll be fighting for their playoff life. The still have Inkster and Monroe on their schedule so they'll be needing this game or looking at the prospect of having to win out. I've been waiting for this game ever since the season started. I'll be in attendance for tomorrow's game and loving every minute. I hope if you're in the area and haven't decided which game to go to if you're a high school football nut, that you stop by. It promises to be a really fun night. Get their a little early because there should be a huge crowd on hand.

Southgate gets Past Dearborn

Was at the game tonight. It was one of the better ones I've been to in a long time. It was back and forth all night. Michael Hatcher was the real deal tonight. He returned kicks and owned the backfield all night. But the Anderson defenders were up to the task when it really counted. Once again Southgate couldn't pass and that will catch up to them soon enough. Both Allen Park and them will be undefeated when they face off in week 6. It should be a very interesting game indeed. But for tonight Anderson is flying high after a very tough and well earned victory over a very formidable Pioneer squad. The Pioneers also tried a field goal from 37 yards while trailing by 3 with 5 seconds left. Anderson blocked it for the victory. Great back and forth game. Was very fortunate to go. Go Titans!!!
