To be the best, you have to beat the best. And that's what the Meridian football team hopes to do this Saturday.

The Mustangs, 9-1 and ranked No. 2 in Division 6, play No. 1 Montague (10-0) - the defending Division 6 champion - at 1 p.m. Saturday in a district championship game at Holton High School, near Muskegon.
"You can say it's No. 1 vs. No. 2, and a lot of people have said that to me," said Mustangs' coach Keith Schulte. "But there's one team, Montague, and then there's everybody else. Until you beat No. 1, you're just part of the pack."

Likewise, Wildcats' coach Pat Collins has a lot of respect for the Mustangs.

Montague, I feel anyway, is a clear favorite in D6. I'm guessing they get by Lakeview fairly easily, maybe have a little challenge with Sanford Meridian, and then head North to take on a tough Calumet team. After that....it is the winner of the Ithaca St Charles rematch which could be interesting and then MSMCC in the Finals. Montgaue has a ton of weapons on Offense and a D1 caliber QB distributing the ball to them. Most teams are going to have a hard time defending this Montague Offense. And you'll notice when the Gue played in bad conditions, on a sloppy field, the Defense rose to the occasion and shut the other team out. Well Coached, lots of weapons, and Montague kids live for Football = hard team to beat.

Game of the week in the WMC. Something just doesn't feel right to me with this Oakridge team. The loss to Heights (c'mon we all know what happened) and the close victory over a Whitehall team that was just totally dominated by Ravenna. But maybe the convincing win over a 2-0 Mason County team straightened things out for the Eagles? Also appears that Oakridge is going to rely on Potts a bit more, going to a spread Offense. Montague on the other hand has been on fire. The Cats showed some issues on the Defensive side of the ball against North Muskegon (I guess you could say the same with Oakridge against Heights). This should be a good one. Shelby hasn't been scoring a lot of points but the Shelby Defense has been decent, giving up 27 to Ravenna and 0 to Grant. These two have quite a rivalry going. Important game for both of these teams who have been pretty evenly matched over the years. White Cloud is supposedly bigger and faster this year, and I know Hart is pretty young this year with only 8 Seniors and 4 Juniors on the team. I'll go with the Indians in this one. WC 30 Hart 20

High school football practice starts Monday

TRAVERSE CITY -- First, the bad news.

St. Francis needs to replace seven starters on both sides of the ball as practice starts Monday for high school football teams around the state.

Now, the good news.

The Division 7 state champion Gladiators return a nucleus that features two Big Ten recruits -- linebackers Max Bullough and Matt Zakrzewski.

"We do have good kids coming back," St. Francis coach Greg Vaughan said. "We have kids that are hungry."

And talented.

"Anytime you have two kids who have D-1 scholarships in hand, people are going to look at that and say, 'You should be good,'" Vaughan said. "They're right.
