Panthers succumb to Muskegon's size, strength
Scott DeCamp, November 07, 2008 9:29 p.m.

MUSKEGON - Not many players have rushed for 100 yards against Muskegon Catholic Central's stout defense this season.

But there was Climax-Scotts senior fullback Jacob Smith Friday night, reaching the century mark on the nose with a 2-yard touchdown run in the final minute of
a Division 8 district championship game at MCC's Kehren Stadium.

It was a bittersweet ending, however, to the 5-foot-7, 155-pounder's career and his team's season. On a cold, rain-soaked, sloppy field, a bigger,
stronger and, in many cases, faster MCC squad rolled to a 27-6 victory.

"They're huge," Smith said of the top-ranked Crusaders (11-0), who will host the winner of today's Mendon/ Pittsford game in next
weekend's regional championship. "Coach has been saying all week, 'It's like playing Division I...

"We play them again, it would be a toss-up," C-S coach Kevin Langs said. "Those two turnovers were huge - that's the big difference. St.
Philip is a great team and they showed it tonight.

Oh I know. I think that most think that Rabideau is the brain child there, but, he's not. C-S has a good program, but I just don't think that they will
have it in them this week. We'll see what the weather brings. MCC's field is in pretty good condition right now. It didn't get too ripped up for
the 5 game home stand, so the footing should be there.

Should be a good game, going to this one, and then to Musky the next day.

What the Hell are you doing up in the middle of the night anyway?

Cold wet with some snow will not really affect either team. As you know AGF I am a huge CS fan but I don't think they have enough for MCC. Quick fact for
you doc. (which you might already know). Kevin Langs was an assistant at Spring Lake when they went to the Dome in 2000, SL has not made a serious playoff
run since and I think that is no small coincidence.

They better be real fast if they are that light up front. I think MCC's O Line averages 6' 2" and about 220 lbs. The 2 Twin Tackles are 6'
6", guards are 6' 1" and I think the center is right about 6 foot. The D Line is about that size as well, and yes, all are fast.
I am looking forward to this match up, C-S has a good winning program and it will be nice to see these two schools match up.
I think early weather report is cold, wet, and maybe some snow.

Panthers get payback
Jon Schultz, October 31, 2008 10:59 p.m.

BATTLE CREEK - Climax-Scotts football coach Kevin Langs sympathized with Panthers fans having to sit on edge while Battle Creek St. Philip marched up and down
C.W. Post Field during the teams' Division 8 first-round playoff game Friday night.

"We're the old bend-but-don't-break, what-you-hated-about-Bo Schembechler-and-Woody Hayes - that's us," Langs said. "And our fans
don't like it either. But that's our theory - hang in there and let's see what happens."

Hanging in there meant the Panthers clawing for their lives at times - twice in the second quarter, St. Philip drove inside the Climax-Scotts 3-yard line and
came up scoreless. But despite being outgained 317-256, and forcing no punts, Climax-Scotts held on for a 27-13 victory.

The Panthers (8-2) will face top-ranked Muskegon Catholic Central (10-0) next weekend.
