Clarkston football team runs with hair-raiser

Imagine a 61-year-old grandfather with jet black hair walking into Ford Field next week sporting a blond Mohawk.

That's the promise fan Mark Phalen made if Clarkston (12-0) beats Sterling Heights Stevenson (12-0) in Saturday's Division 1 football semifinal (7 p.m.) at Troy Athens High School. And he isn't the only one. Mohawk fever is taking over this town as Clarkston continue its march to what it hopes is its first football state championship.

Many of the players and some of their friends already have shaved the sides of their heads.

This one was made a tougher choice when Stevenson lost its top two running backs and Clarkston QB Tyler Scarlett began playing like Tom Brady. Doesn't he know that Clarkston is a basketball school? Stevenson must overcome Clarkston

With Jason Fracassa throwing moon balls to D.J. Mershman and Marcus Beaurem, the players on Stevenson's football team often look like they are shooting for the stars.

Of course, the Titans want to take a more earthbound journey, one that ends with a game at Ford Field, and to do that, they must take one more, big step for Stevenson-kind: shoot down undefeated Clarkston in a Division 1 state semifinal on Saturday night at Troy Athens. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

"The thing we've been talking to the kids is you can only play one game at a time," said Stevenson coach Rick Bye, whose team has scored 477 points - the third most in Macomb County in the last 60 years - en route to a 12-0 record and the program's ninth trip to the final four.
