Yeah, things have changed a bit around the old Ville ...
Maybe Monroe is going to have simliar trouble soon? I know they weren't able to remodel the weight room and things like that were put on the back burner ... who knows? |

I could probably write a thesis on what is going on in that building right now and get some sort of masters degree. It is a function of a changing community
economically and demographically, first and foremost. The school itself is in a huge transition period. I think there is probably also less interest and
support than there has been in the past. And if you've been to any games in the last three years, you'll see that the team hasn't exactly come out
and run anything the same from year to year. So, that lack of consistency, in my opinion, probably prevents them from perfecting one system and expanding it to
get creative and unpredictable and become tougher to play against. The real question about Clarenceville is whether things just aligned for a couple years
(good coach, good athletes, enough support), and never will again, or whether football can become a priority and get back on track? They are fortunate to play
in the Metro, probably one of the weakest conferences in the state, and if they're struggling there that suggests to me that it might take awhile to start
approaching the playoffs again. That's about as much detail as I can give on the public board! Does that answer anything?

If you're asking for opinion on Irish, you won't find anything negative here.
He's been great with the community, really cares about the kids, and has overcome a lot in his time there. Runs a phenomenal offseason program that gets great attendance year round. He is a good guy and has my respect for sure. Obviously, I'd like the bottom line wins and losses to be better, but that is probably the only piece of the puzzle missing in terms of his coaching overall. |

Hmm...Seems like an odd hire for EK. After Tim Shaw graduated he's had no playoff success at all. He got Monroe to the playoffs, but could never get past the first round. |

A couple EK people brought that up too, but he was cleaning up a pretty big mess in Monroe and had just started to turn the corner.
The only year I would have expected them to have playoff success was this last season, and they were upset at home in the first round. I guess despite that EK figures its worth a shot? Anything is better than 2 - 7, and he's proven he can turn things around ... |

I think the hire is a terrific one! And, don't listen to the 4th choice etc. crud on Mlive. Greg has been on our radar for years. He will be a good fit
here at EK. Here is why, we need someone honest and with integrity to come in and put this program back on track. Someone who the kids and fans can trust.
Someone who does not play favorites, no bs, just someone who understands the game, can teach it and enjoys working with kids. Someone who can work his system
around the talent he has as opposed to someone who forces the kids to do things that they can't i.e. AJ being made a QB when clearly he does not have the
size (5'7") the arm (90% of his completions were little swing passes or quick flat dump-offs) and someone who treats all of the kids like men, and
with dignity... and insists that his staff does likewise. This school of 3000 only had 48 kids come out for varsity football this past year because the kids
hated the coach. We typically have 85 or more kids out. Why? BEcause of how they were treated. I saw it first hand, and it wasn't a bunch of whiney
teenagers who were spoiled and lazy. There are kids that should have come out, that are great kids, who opted to quit playing football because they were tired
of the way they were treated and focused on other sports. We needed to find someone who could restore the integrity of the Varisty Coaching position and get
kids back into the program. A builder. I can see some of you already thinking that a good coach isn't always loved by his players, I know that. But good
intellegent, tough coaches are respected and are competent on and off the field. Good coaches do not get out coached game after game and good coaches are guys
who's players will run through a wall for them no matter what. When all that happenes, the winning and losing will take care of itself.
As for his coaching staff, I am not sure what is going to happen there. There are some terrific people already on board that will help him with the transition. And, there are a couple that definately should be shown the door!! I guess we will all have to wait and see on that. This is a bright new chapter in the athletic tradition at East Kentwood. Don't be fooled by a hand full of knuckleheads on mlive, we as a community welcome the new coach and will support him with as much vigor and resources as the good people of Monroe. GO EK!! |

EK I like what I hear. You guys got a great coach, and if you're close in your assessment of what EK needs, it is the right fit. Congrats. You're going
to enjoy it.

I'm not gonna stroke the guy, but the attendance he gets in off season workouts is incredible. Irish seems to be a small town kind of guy, but the school he is at is headed in a different direction. He is the type of coach that can make everyone a believer and would be a great salesman. However, it is not easy to have a winning program when several kids get their first bit of structure in life in the ninth grade. Irish asks a lot of his players and not everyone is willing to play the type of team first football he promotes. |

The buzz here is that there are a ton of eager kids wanting to get started with the new coach. There is renewed excitement in the halls of EK. Several kids
were in the gym I go to this morning. These are guys that didn't go out last season but should have. Hopefully, we will have some big boys ready to go into
the trenches come practise time. The sun is shining in Kentwood today, and in more ways then one ( sorry that was pretty corny)...
GO EK!! |
