Let the rebuilding begin! |

The cupboard is nearly bare, the new guy has his work cut out for him. Unfortunatley he has retained two coaches that should have been let go and who the kids
not only don't like but hate. So, the turn out for football is very small. Hopefully coach will see this and make some adjustments. It could be a long
tough season for the Falcons again...

I wonder how Jenison is faring with Sigler. I've heard the numbers are up there compared to the days of Larkin.

Not sure about Jenison, except to say that Irv will get the kids out for football at all ages. He will build that program back to the level it once was 25
years ago. As for us, we had 120 kids out for camp, about 40 were frosh, 20 or so were JV and 55 or so for varsity. We are lacking the big kids that are taking
a wait and see attitude. Unfortunately Coach retained two coachs that the kids don't respect, so he will have to overcome that. One of them works with the
linemen, and the kids hate him. He was disciplined and suspended by the school system for conduct unbecoming... He needs to go back with Eddie O.
This entire community is ready to support Coach Greg and his team. I thinkn the expectations are pretty low as far as wins and losses are concerned. It takes time to build a program. If he opts to run the ball, we should be okay and hang in there. We should have a good group of talented backs available this year for varsity. The linemen will be smaller but vrey athletic, just like Shilito likes them :-) Hopefully we will have a good first year for our new coach, and return the integrity and character to the game. Well let's look at it game by game. New QB (hopefully one that can throw more then 15yds), new system that stresses the run (which we are very good at) and
no big lineman. Lot's of speed and pretty good hands on both sides of the ball. WIth that said, here we go
Opponent w or l Caldonia - loss The Scots are too much for us in this learning curve L @Grand Blanc - toss up, not sure about GB so I will give that one to us W @Grand Haven - loss The Bucks are a good team getting better L @W. Ottawa - toss up, WO is a good team but if we can get up early W Hudsonville - loss lights out L @Grandville - loss The Dawgs are better then some think Shaws year L @Muskegon - loss The Big Reds are too much for us... L Jenison - toss up only because Irv is back. I will say we win this one W Rockford - Loss - the Rams will have thier way with us... L Even with this record, if the kids are learning, having fun and building the program, then we are way ahead of where we have been these past few years. Your thoughts? GO EK! |

I went by the school last night and made several observations... first we are bigger then we were; we are still lightening fast; there are alot more kids out
then we had before; and they worked thier butts off and left the field giving high fives and really upbeat... all the way to the cars in the parking lot. The
kids really love this guy. They have bought in. They looked crisp, in great shape, and ready to dig into two-a-days next week. It has been four years since I
have seen such positive attitudes on this team. They may not win more then 3 games again this year, but we are turning the corner and the rebuilding has begun.
Time will tell.

Grand Haven might actually be a winnable game for EK. Usually the Grand Haven fans on mlive have a lot of confidence in their team, sometimes too much, and
they all seem to think this will be a down year for them based on talent graduation, a poor JV team coming up, and losing assistants....So I'd put GH down
as a possible win.

Would be nice to see EK get it back to where they were a few years back. Good competition is a good thing. I am sure the new coach will get them back,
especially if the players are buying in to him. I wonder about Jenison this year also. I am curious what their numbers are going to be like. They were
definitely down the last few years. Will be interesting to see how they are under Sigler. All in all I am starting to get anxious for the season to get rolling.

I am hearing good things from Wildcat country. A guy I workout with in the gym lives there. He was telling me that the kids have responded well to Sigler and
the turn out is up. Jenison is not going to be competing for the title this year, however, like EK they are turning things around and will be restoring the
excellence one piece at a time... starting in seventy-eighters. Regardless of whether you like Sigler or not, he is a good coach and he has a great following.
The kids seem to like him as he treats them with respect and dignity. He demands a lot from them, but if they buy into his system, they get good results. I
think the OK Red will once again be the toughest in the state in a year or two with this group of terrific coaches.

Even though we lost to a good Caldonia team, I think we have turned the corner as a program. The participation is up, the kids are playing hard and didn't
quit and fought to the final gun, and they are working hard this week in practise... especially on tackling! They say that teams improve the most between the
first and second games. This team will surprise some people.
The measuring stick I am using is that the coachs seem to have the kids attention. From time to time, they executed the new offense to perfection. Ditto the 4 - 4 defense. Major kudo's to the Scots who also played very hard, didn't give up and finally got the lead in the fourth and hung on for a narrow win. Our kids took the loss very hard, they wanted to give thier new coach his first win at home in the first game. These kids are fired up. We are off to Grand Blanc this week (of whom I know very little, but will be in attendance with my wife). Hopefully we will see an improved football team before starting the OK schedule next week at Grand Haven. GO EK!! |

Well we shall see. I hate not to be a homer but I fret anytime a defense is set with just running a 4-4 and provide no diversion. Of course having 4 down
lineman all the time is what I would do though.

EK wins on the road at Grand Blanc. It was a good win for the Falcons. They are much improved on D, and the offense looked better as well. Still had some
issues with wrapping up, and the O line needs to sustain the blocks a little better, but much improved and a good first win for Coach Hudkins! Next week, Grand
Haven on the road.

Sounds like things are on the upswing in EK land. Trouble is, the conference is so tough you might not notice a team that has rebuilt itself thanks to the
other teams that are already so strong. EK has great resources: an excellent facility, a large student body and a new coach. I predict EK will defeat Grand
Haven this week and I'll wager a guess that they'll end up 4-5 or 5-4 this year. I see victories at Grandville, WO, Grand Haven, and Jenison which
would put them at 5-4 and possibly enough playoff points. Add in the unpredictability element of the OK Red and I think they will be 4-5. That's my
prediction and I'm sticking to it.

Muskyfan - your intuition was correct, EK moved the ball well agiainst the Bucs. THe problem was in the red zone. Got there 5 times, turned over the ball 5
times. One was a fumble on the one as the rb was about to run into the end zone, three were turnovers on downs, and one was an int. The EK defense played an
excellent game, giving the offense a chance. Just couldn't hang on to the ball! Next week, West Ottawa.

I believe the Falcons will continue to improve and I'm surprised they lost the game against GH. I hope the pass defense is up to par against WO.

The frustrating part is that we have the speed to get to the ball(carrier), we just don't wrap up and drive through like we should. It is so very
frustrating to watch! But alas, it is not life and death, it is just a game :-)

Speaking of rebuilding at EK, how are things going at the lower levels?

Muskyfan - great question. I run the chain gang for the frosh and jv games, so I get an up close and personal look at it. It took Eddie three years to destroy
this program, and it will not be rebuilt in one year. However, Coach Greg has a unique and effective way of rebuilding. Starting with the Seventy-Eighters...
he is not scheduling games. You might have read about this over on M-live as a particular players Mom isn't happy with this approach. He has six or eight
22 man teams, and they play scrimmages in the Stadium. This way, each kid gets to play 250% more then if they played other schools. They start on the 40 etc
etc etc. They have officials, down markers etc. They are working hard on fundimentals. And, I can tell you that it seems to be working! The crispness of the
execution has returned to this level, as the kids seem to know what to do each snap of the ball. Sop as they master one thing, they build and go onto the next.
The Freshmen as a terrific bunch. They are 1 - 3 but are playing hard, learning and improving each week. This is a very talented class with a lot of great athletes. The JV are 0 - 4 and had a horrible start. They are small in number, and they just seemed to be a class that was not excited about playing the game. The last two weeks however, they have had a huge turnaround in attitude. They lost Thursday to a good WO team 7 - 0 and held a true up and coming all state QB to 7 points. So my take is that we are on the mend at EK. I think we are improving at all levels, and kids are falling love with the game again. It will take some time for the pieces to come back together, but they will. Coach Greg and his coaches at all levels are doing a terrific job as they rebuld our program. GO EK! |

Sounds good EKDad. It sounds like it will be a gradual but long term rebuild, especially if the younger kids get excited about the game again. Talent will
develop, kids will believe in themselves, the wins will come and more kids will go out for the team.
