East vs West debate going mainstream? |
Lead | ||||||
|
Article by Jane Bos of GRPress picking up on EW debate and fueling the passions of regional diehards? Sort of. She doesn't go off on the topic but titles
her story on the Rockford win to appropriately capture what she knows is a west side mantra. The west side has arguably had the better of it in the playoffs
for much of the last 7-8 years. I wonder when they (we) are gonna lose that little brother mentality and see ourselves as the "teams to beat"?

East side has won 5 of the last 7 D1 crowns. East side won 4 of the last 7 D2 crowns. The east side doesn't have that many teams in the rest of the
divisons and that's where the main action is. Just like the west side doesn't have that many D1 teams. I think that Jane Bos better fact check her
article as I recall CHS beating Lake Orion a couple of years ago in the second round in the playoffs. I hate writers who put out misinformation.
Rockford traveled to Eastern Michigan University's Rynearson Stadium and took on Lake Orion -- a team that has reached at least the third round of the playoffs the past three yearsSo the above statement was just inaccurate. No wonder the AP poll isn't that good when one of their voters don't even look up information.

East. West. North. South?
Show me some good, entertaining teams ..... I'll watch them and root for them no matter where they are from. I don't get the regional pride thing. Want to root for your team? ok Root for your conference? ok Beyond that I don't get it. Why do I care about a team and hour away that's considered an EAST team any more than I care about a team 2 hours away that's considered a WEST team? I have state pride vs. other states ..... but I don't care about rooting interests with vague/imaginary boundries.

I'm with Searn on this. I just used to see the scores in the newspapers back when I was in elementary school though I did pay more attention to certain
portions of the state (particular teams) than others. Basically I was proven right by my conference ratings that I have produced on here though. I always
root for Michigan teams to beat other states.

I actually agree with both of you regarding regional rooting. I only pointed this out to show that it obviously still exists (at least in west michigan) or she
wouldn't have led her story off with such a headline. Everyone knows that you write to maximize readership and headlines are the grabber. She obviously
believes that this kind of headline will resonate. I just thought it was interesting. BTW, I agree with you MrNCAA on her accuracy. I've always given Jane
the benefit of the doubt when she is talking on the radio and states inaccurate info, because when having to say something quickly, misstatements are
understandable. But, writing in a column is easy enough to fact check. No excuse there.

Well its not just football but state grants that tends to be a headline grabber. But its a grand rapids thing IMHO. we have been like that for years and will
more than likely continue to do so for years.

The topic is as much political as anything else. To some Westsiders, The East side (Det Met area) is considered Detroit Centric. And outstate resents the tax
money they pay to Lansing, and the percentage that does not stay with them Similarly many UP taxpayers resent that $0.91 cents of each tax dollar goes
downstate (you think they call us Trolls for nothing? Forget the bridge joke). Add to that, a good number of outstaters who absolutely fear the idea of
visiting Metro Detroit, and Detroit in particular. I think the West vs East HS FB debate is merely an extension of those other issues. A symptom of a
prevailing attitude if you will.

Also we've got to mention that the Grand Rapids Press is a western Michigan paper and feels a bit like the younger sibling in a rivalry with the papers with a statewide presence. Plus the Press writers know they can only offend its readers by picking a eastern school. |

The way the west side of the state has come on since the turn of the decade is great and has only strengthened MHSAA Football.
When I first started following MHSAA football, in the big school classes is was almost considered a given that the West Side teams were going to get waxed by the East Side power at the Silverdome. Since that time the East Side Powers are still strong, but the West Side Powers have gotten much stronger. The West Side has cared more about HS Football for years and now they are playing on the same level (if not higher).... I love it! Go West Side! Keep it up! Go East Side! Pick it up!

Teams like Midland Dow, Traverse City, Escanaba, Muskegon, and depending on how you want to treat Pi Hi are among the non metro Detroit teams that won state championships when there was only one Class A state championship at stake. Some of those schools won more than one state championship during that time frame. Then, you have 5 out of 18 state championships won by non metro Detroit schools during the double naught period, which isn't that bad considering how many Class A teams are in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties.

Let's just say I don't believe any of those schools you mentioned have made it to the finals (aside from Muskegon) since I've been following ....
And I'm basically referring to the West Side schools, not Central/Northern areas.

I'll just add that I think it's more of a Metro Detroit VS Grand Rapids area debate.
Where does the rest of Mich fit? UP, Northern schools. Mid state, etc.

Yep, I noticed Mick's article today on the Freep website. He didn't even put Warren DeLaSalle in D2 as I told him in one of my comments on his method
of doing the divisions this year. So I don't think that he's all that interested in factual information that I like to point out. It doesn't mean
that Rockford can't win the D1 title this year, just saying that D1 has been a east side domination recently.
