Michigan Lutheran Seminary waits for football playoff word after loss to Webberville

And now, they wait.

Michigan Lutheran Seminary needed a win Friday to qualify for the football playoffs, but bumped head-first into an 8-1 Webberville team that rolled over the Cardinals, 39-7, at Seminary.

"I'd put them on a par with St. Charles and Carrollton ... they're that good," Seminary coach Larry Seafert said. "They were stronger than we were. That's just a good, good team."

"But you want to play the good teams. There's a chance we can still get in. For the kids' sakes, I hope they get a chance to play another game. They deserve it."

After teams with six-or-more wins are counted, five-win teams fill out the playoff bracket, based on playoff points. As a Class D team playing primarily a Class C schedule, 5-4 Seminary expects to have one of the highest points total among Class D teams in the state.

"We'll just have to wait and see," Seafert said. "Who knows? If we make it, we might end up playing Webberville again next week. What's that they say ... it's hard to beat the same team twice."

Seminary's defense would have to find a way to stop Webberville's ground game, led by senior Eric Haite. The Spartans ran for 230 yards, led by Haite with 162.

"He's the best back we've faced," Seafert said. "He's fast, he's strong, he's elusive, he breaks tackles. And he's a workhorse."

Haite scored on TD runs of 1and 18 yards. Quarterback Garrett Teague added TD runs of 25 and 8 yards, plus a 35-yard TD pass to Jordan Farris.

The Spartans sent the game into a running clock with 59 seconds remaining in the third quarter when linebacker Matt Holmes grabbed a fumble and ran 60 yards for a touchdown.

Seminary avoided the shutout with 1:02 remaining in the game when quarterback Lucas Proeber's pass bounced off receiver Micah Plocher and into Mark Voss' hands for a touchdown.

"I drew up the route," Seafert said. "I sure didn't draw up the juggle."

Seminary, which totaled 164 yards rushing and 45 passing, was led by Dan Miller with 96 yards on 14 carries. Aaron Lindloff added 47 yards rushing.

I think thats a safe guess. Webberville for some reason sounds a bit like Hopkins, only with a better passing game. Everyone will expect a round 1 MCC blowout, but I'm thinking it might be tougher than everyone thinks. If the MCC gets on a roll however........look out cause it'll get ugly (34-0 with the dogs called off early). If the Webberville D is good, look for the MCC Defense to win it for them in a lower scoring game (28-7).
