Looking way ahead - potential semi-final sites |
Lead | ||
|
Anyone have any idea where the hypothetical location would be, should East Grand Rapids and Saint Joseph both take care of business and meeting in the semis? I
haven't made it to a game in Michigan in two years now, but that one potentially wouldn't be too far to drive from Chicago. It's also the week
after Michigan's season will mercifully end, and I'll need a football fix. Thanks for anyone who can help out.

It was at Otsego last year I would assume it would be there again this season.

Don't get too cocky and look ahead to an EGR-St. Joe game yet, St. Joe got very lucky with their win last night against Wayland Union. If you need a
football fix though, St. Joe and Lakeshore are playing Friday at 7:30 at St. Joe and it's looking like it will be a very good game, the first one went
21-18 with a late fumble by Lakeshore giving the win to St. Joe.

How about Falcon Field at East Kentwood?

Fair enough, the Lakeshore-St Joe game will probably be standing room only so if you're not a fan of it then it isn't actually advisable to go. But
like GHSfootball1990 said last year St. Joe and EGR played at Otsego, I'm not sure where Lakeshore and EGR played in their few semi final matches but I
imagine it'll be along the line of Otsego as well, so 2-3 hour drive from Chicago, or at least in that ball park.

for the semi's, EGR played Lakeshore at Houseman Field In GR. I doubt they would do that again as St. Joe and Lakeshore are about the same distance from
EGR and I can remember dome complaining when we played Lakeshore that it was "essentially" a home game for East. Fair criticism IMO. I think
that's why the game was played at Otsego last year....that along with the fact that there are more Field Turf fields now than there were 5 years ago,
allowing the MHSAA to actually pick a neutral site nearly equidistant in travel for both schools.

This may seem like a stupid question...but how can there be grass fields listed for semi-final sites? All semi-final games have to be played on turf of some
kind.

MHSAA wants as many sites available as possible because you never know who is gonna make the semi's and they want to have as neutral a site as possible.
Also, other things like field condition and school construction may make a site less desirable. That said, I think it is their obvious goal of using turf
fields where possible. As more and more schools go to this surface, I believe you will see less and less grass fields as SF sites.

Strange since last year's Midland V Lowell game was on a grass field at Lansing.

Ya, I don't think games HAVE to be on turf .. it's just preferred.

The site that's used depends on what happens in the other Divisions; the teams in those Divisions will also affect what sites are available for every other Division. Also, the Semifinals will be the day of the Michigan/Ohio State game, not the week after. |

Some schools don't keep their fields available for the 4th week after the regular season ends. Others don't care to put up with the headaches of hosting an event. College facilities are dependent on what their school's schedule is (do they have a home game that day? Did they make the lower-Division playoffs?). Location is relevant. What schools are playing in the Semifinals are also relevant. |

Let's hope the MHSAA does not continue with their policy of having a semi-final site in Lansing. There are now too many outstanding fiacilities available
in this state that now have the most modern of turf surfaces. The GR area has as many has five sites - five more then Lansing.

I didn't see Hillsdale College on the list of facilities to host semi final games in the past. Last fall they hosted the D-6 game between Leslie &
Blissfield.

WolverineKeith wrote: In some future seasons, Michigan/OSU will be the same day/weekend as the State Finals, not the State Semifinals, now that the Big Ten is committed to having every season last 13 weeks. It was traditionally the Big Ten's rule that the season ended the Saturday prior to Thanksgiving. However, when the NCAA increased the schedule maximum to 12 games, that presented a conflict. Most years, there are 12 weeks in the Football season prior to Thanksgiving, so for the last few years Big Ten teams have played 12 games in 12 weeks. Last offseason, they voted to change that: every season will last 13 weeks, so that everybody can take 1 week off. In certain years, depending on what day of the month Thanksgiving falls on, there are 13 weeks prior to Thanksgiving, and everybody is happy: the season ends the week prior to Thanksgiving and everybody gets a week off (like this year). |
