Scouting Climax-Scotts: The Panthers lost two games this season, the first time C-S has not gone 9-0 in the regular season since 2002. The first defeat came
against St. Philip in Week 2 (14-12); the other in Week 6 to Pittsford (17-14). In the rematch against the Tigers, C-S will have to get a stop on defense as
St. Phil didn't punt once in the last meeting and allowed C-S only three offensive possessions in the first half. ... The Panthers' linemen
will also have a challenge as coach Kevin Langs said his group is at a serious size disadvantage (the Panthers average around 160 pounds up front).
... Senior RB Jake Smith is Climax-Scotts' leading rusher with 783 yards on 103 carries (7.6 average). He also has eight catches for 113 yards to lead the
team. Junior Beau Langs has 690 yards on 57 carries (12.1 average). He also has four interceptions on defense to lead the team.

Panthers get payback
Jon Schultz, October 31, 2008 10:59 p.m. BATTLE CREEK - Climax-Scotts football coach Kevin Langs sympathized with Panthers fans having to sit on edge while Battle Creek St. Philip marched up and down C.W. Post Field during the teams' Division 8 first-round playoff game Friday night. "We're the old bend-but-don't-break, what-you-hated-about-Bo Schembechler-and-Woody Hayes - that's us," Langs said. "And our fans don't like it either. But that's our theory - hang in there and let's see what happens." Hanging in there meant the Panthers clawing for their lives at times - twice in the second quarter, St. Philip drove inside the Climax-Scotts 3-yard line and came up scoreless. But despite being outgained 317-256, and forcing no punts, Climax-Scotts held on for a 27-13 victory. The Panthers (8-2) will face top-ranked Muskegon Catholic Central (10-0) next weekend. Climax-Scotts junior running back Beau Langs said the win served as a little payback for the Panthers' 14-12 loss to St. Philip in week two, ending a six-year regular-season win streak. "It feels great. I remember them week two - they were screaming and yelling, big upset against us and hadn't beat us in a couple years," said Langs, who led the Panthers with 110 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. "I really had that in the back of my mind." St. Philip ran all over the Panthers on their first possession, with Anthony Brown's 9-yard touchdown the game's first points. Climax-Scotts responded immediately, and on its third play, running back Jake Smith broke a 54-yard run, outsprinting the defense to the end zone, making it 7-6. In the second quarter, the Tigers to charged to the Panthers' 3-yard line before Climax-Scotts defensive back Brandon Weaver picked off Brock Grosso's pass in the end zone. Climax-Scotts then capitalized, as Weaver finished a 72-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown. "We came out with so much heart," Weaver said. "Especially from last time, I was afraid we were going to come out scared or something but we came out strong." On the Tigers' next possession, they fumbled a snap on the Panthers 1-yard-line, and Climax-Scotts recovered to end the half leading 14-7. "Brandon Weaver's interception was huge, the fumble was huge, and sometimes in football you're blessed," Kevin Langs said. "It could be a different ballgame right now." St. Philip regained momentum in the second half after holding Climax-Scotts to a three-and-out on its initial possession, and then scored on running back Jim Brutsche's 2-yard touchdown. But the Panthers responded on the next possession when Langs pounded in for a 2-yard score, making it 20-13 with 1:54 left in the third. St. Philip had its fourth-quarter comeback hopes snuffed when Grosso's pass to tight end Max Dechant came up just short on fourth down, and the Panthers' 16-play, 10-minute touchdown drive iced it 27-13. Brutsche paced the Tigers with 134 rushing yards and one touchdown on 21 carries. "They played pretty flawlessly," St. Philip coach Jay Carrigan said of C-S. "I was pretty impressed with the way they played today, and the intensity they played with." |

Cant believe what the coach says though as they have 11 players on the roster over 190 lbs. Maybe none of them play Line though (ha-ha).

They better be real fast if they are that light up front. I think MCC's O Line averages 6' 2" and about 220 lbs. The 2 Twin Tackles are 6'
6", guards are 6' 1" and I think the center is right about 6 foot. The D Line is about that size as well, and yes, all are fast.
I am looking forward to this match up, C-S has a good winning program and it will be nice to see these two schools match up. I think early weather report is cold, wet, and maybe some snow. |

Cold wet with some snow will not really affect either team. As you know AGF I am a huge CS fan but I don't think they have enough for MCC. Quick fact for
you doc. (which you might already know). Kevin Langs was an assistant at Spring Lake when they went to the Dome in 2000, SL has not made a serious playoff
run since and I think that is no small coincidence.

Oh I know. I think that most think that Rabideau is the brain child there, but, he's not. C-S has a good program, but I just don't think that they will
have it in them this week. We'll see what the weather brings. MCC's field is in pretty good condition right now. It didn't get too ripped up for
the 5 game home stand, so the footing should be there.
Should be a good game, going to this one, and then to Musky the next day. What the Hell are you doing up in the middle of the night anyway? |

"We play them again, it would be a toss-up," C-S coach Kevin Langs said. "Those two turnovers were huge - that's the big difference. St. Philip is a great team and they showed it tonight. LOL |

Panthers succumb to Muskegon's size, strength
Scott DeCamp, November 07, 2008 9:29 p.m. MUSKEGON - Not many players have rushed for 100 yards against Muskegon Catholic Central's stout defense this season. But there was Climax-Scotts senior fullback Jacob Smith Friday night, reaching the century mark on the nose with a 2-yard touchdown run in the final minute of a Division 8 district championship game at MCC's Kehren Stadium. It was a bittersweet ending, however, to the 5-foot-7, 155-pounder's career and his team's season. On a cold, rain-soaked, sloppy field, a bigger, stronger and, in many cases, faster MCC squad rolled to a 27-6 victory. "They're huge," Smith said of the top-ranked Crusaders (11-0), who will host the winner of today's Mendon/ Pittsford game in next weekend's regional championship. "Coach has been saying all week, 'It's like playing Division I players.' The game was fun." C-S finishes its season with an 8-3 record, including wins over previously unbeaten Battle Creek St. Philip last week and against perennial power Iron Mountain North Dickinson Week 5 in Gaylord. "I thought we were a little tentative in the beginning (Friday)," C-S coach Kevin Langs said. "We didn't tackle well, and they were blocking us 10 yards down (the field) at the time. We were going, 'Woah!' and we had to wake up a bit." By that time - that is, with less than 9 minutes gone from the contest - MCC had built a 14-0 lead. The Crusaders scored on their first two possessions of the game, capped by 2- and 27-yard runs, respectively, by elusive, speedy senior Rodney Anderson. C-S struggled to corral the 5-9, 170-pounder all night. He totaled a game-high 193 yards on 20 carries, including a 10-yard TD run in the second quarter that gave MCC a 20-0 lead by halftime. "It was really hard because the first half was really wet," Anderson said. "It was hard to push off. The second half, coach (Mike Holmes) told us to get our whole foot in the ground and (make a) cut off that." The Crusaders went up 27-0 midway through the third quarter on senior Steve Mitchell's 10-yard run. Mitchell, MCC's leading ground-gainer entering the game, accounted for 61 of his team's 320 rushing yards. The Crusaders outgained C-S in total offense, 337-169, with 60 of the Panthers' yards coming on a first-quarter Smith gallop. "We run a Wing-T ourselves, so it's nothing new to us, obviously," MCC senior linebacker Brian Johnson, who registered a team-high 11 tackles and two interceptions, said of the Panthers' offensive approach. "The main thing was to stop that fullback on the trap." The best C-S drive of the game was its last, which came against the Crusaders' reserves. The Panthers marched 66 yards in 11 plays, eating up five minutes and capping it when Smith crashed into the end zone. C-S's only other scoring opportunity ended on fourth-and-10 from the Crusaders' 12, when Johnson picked off junior Brandon Weaver's slightly underthrown pass at the 1. "Pretty much we thought we could control things and force them maybe to throw more than they wanted to throw," Holmes said of the Panthers. C-S junior Beau Langs, who rotated at quarterback with Weaver, was 3-of-5 passing for 33 yards and one interception. Langs, who had nine tackles, was limited to 10 rushing yards on six carries. Smith paced the Panthers with 11 tackles, while Billy Fitzsimmons and Alec Schau made eight stops apiece. Outside of a 48-20 blowout win over Milwaukee (Wis.) Thomas More, MCC's defense has not allowed more than 14 points in a game this season. Notable victories on the Crusaders' resume include those over Class B playoff teams Hillsdale (41-13), Detroit Country Day (35-6), Hopkins (35-14) and Allendale (14-0), and a 20-3 win over LaCrosse Aquinas, which was a defending state champ in Wisconsin. "Yeah, they're good," Kevin Langs said of the Crusaders. "Give our kids a lot of credit for fighting, but Mike Holmes has a lot of class and he did a nice job. His kids were tough, physical ... they blocked hard all the way to the end, they tackled well." |
