I agree with your rationale. I just think it would be good if all schools used a standardized weighting for AP/Honors classes. Some schools have a 4.3 our of 4.0, some a 4.5. CC has the highest (5.0) that I've heard. To use your comparison. Two schools have similar academic programs. School A has a 4.3 weighted avg. School B has a 5.0. Student A at School A takes all honors and AP classes and gets mostly As. He has a 4.27 GPA. At school B, Student A takes mostly honors/AP classes and gets mostly As. He has a 4.95 GPA. Student B at School B takes mostly regular classses, but a few honors classes. He has mostly A's and a GPA of 4.27. I assume you would agree that the student at School A with a 4.27 is a better student than student B at school B, even though he has an identical 4.27. That's why I like standardized test scores better than GPA's when comparing two students..

If there is to be an academic all state team, it should be based on standardized test scores, not GPA's--unless the GPA's are standardized. That's easy to do. You just base all GPAs' on a 4.0 scale. But, wait. All 4.0 scale GPAs are not equal either, since all schools are not equal. The whole Academic All State team is a slippery slope. Administrators feel they have to have it, so that academic performance is recognized along with athletic performance.

I don't know how they come up with the team GPA. Do they include all team players or just starters. Somebody must know the answer. I can't imagine they use the whole team, which includes a lot of smart kids who never play. I think they use starters. But, not all teams have a firm list of 22 starters (how do you handle two way players).
