I wonder if they use net GPA's since not all GPA's are equal. Some schools have very generous weightings for AP or Honors classes. I believe CC has
one of the most generous weightings, which allows for as high as a 5.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. This could account for its #1 position. Many of the top academic
schools have strict 4.0 maximums (e.g. UD Jesuit) in spite of offering tougher AP/Honors courses. One schools 3.9 isn't always the same as another
school's 3.9. For that reason, I don't pay a lot of attention to these Academic teams, or GPA's for that matter. SAT/ACT scores or National Merit
Finalists per capita are much more meaningful when comparing schools.

How many players do the GPA take into account anyway? I don't think it means anything no matter what the grading scale is...... so the team has a handful
of very smart kids .... to me this would be more relevant to take the entire team average GPA.
In terms of 4.0 and 5.0 grading scale ... I kinda like the 5.0 scale. (not that it ever applied to me) Example: School on the 4.0 scale. Student A: Takes an average high school schedule, get's all A's .... 4.0 GPA Student B: Takes all AP classes and get's nearly all A's .... 3.9 GPA Which is more impressive? I'll take the AP kid with 3.9 GPA School with the 5.0 scale Student A: Takes an average high school schedule, get's all A's .... 4.0 GPA Student B: Takes all AP classes and get's nearly all A's .... 4.9 GPA In this case the kid taking the advanced classes now stands out from the crowd. I never took an AP class, so it was never an issue for me ... but I like the way the 5.0 scales props up the special kids taking classes beyond the high school level. |

Maybe more info than you care to know . CC gives a 3.6 for an A- . The public school in our area gives a 4.0 for an A-.
This allows for a wider range in the public school to maintain a 4.0 . |

Ya,
These Academic All-State teams are tough to judge for many reasons.... . it is what it is.... Given the GPAs listed by the teams I doubt the sample is that large that they take from each teams ... possibly the average GPA of the Top 5-10 students ? I have no idea. |
