All-Area Posts: 419 07/08/09 8:55 AM http://prepseer.com	After several years of D-2 superiority, it looks like this will be D-1's year to shine. Of course, there will be some D-2 teams that are good enough to beat the best in D-1. But, as a group, I think you have to give the edge to D-1 in 2009.

The top of D2 should be able to play with anyone in D1 and have a shot to beat them ... but D1 looks deeper with strong teams. While I think the top teams in D2 are just as good as D1, when the playoff fields come out I think the D1 32 team field will be better than the D2 32, especially after the top 10 teams in D2 there is a considerable drop off IMO. Freshmen Unranked Walkon Posts: 2 07/08/09 10:51 AM	It is very difficult to argue against DI. Here is an idea I had a few years back. Eliminate the state football playoffs from eight division to six. Five division based on school size and one super division with the best teams in the state competing to win the ultimate state championship. The Super division is made up of the top 32 playoff point teams in the state. The Super division would be made up of almost exclusively DI, DII and DIII teams just based on the competition they play. If you are a top point team in any of the top three divisions you must compete in the Super division. If you are from one of the lower divisions, you are given the option to accept or decline the offer. The other five division will only take the top 32 playoff point teams in each divisions. Overall points determine your seeding - NO REGIONS. This would eliminate the issue with many regions being loaded with quality teams and other regions looking like a powder puff division. Yes a U.P. team may have to come down to the Ohio border on the opening week of the tournament or vice versa. I have never figured out why HS football in Michigan has eight state champions and every other sport both boys and girls has four or less.

Interesting stuff MC ... try doing a board search as we have had quite a few topics discussing at length some new ideas for playoff systems ... the best idea in my opinion decreased the number of champions from 8 to 5. Junior Posts: 113 07/08/09 9:49 PM	If Michigan's playoff system was changed, I'd make it similar to Texas. Most sports would have five divisions (1A to 5A or A to AAAAA). Each school would be placed into one of 32 general districts which would be used for most sports (no more ten-school conferences!) For some sports, schools could be moved or two or more districts could be combined. In football, eight-man schools would be classified as 1A. Any 1A school that plays 11-man football would be moved up to 2A for football only. In 2A through 5A, the top 64 teams based on playoff points would make the playoffs. Each class would be divided into two sub-classes (2A-1, 2A-2, 3A-1, 3A-2, 4A-1, 4A-2, 5A-1, 5A-2). Therefore, each sub-class would have 32 teams, the same number as today. The schools would be assigned to a sub-class based on enrollment. For example, a school in 2A-1 would be larger than a school in 2A-2. For most other sports, each class would compete for one state championship. Class Breakdowns: 5A: 1128 and above (Examples: AA Pioneer, Detroit CC, Inkster, Muskegon) 4A: 626 to 1127 (Examples: Chelsea, East Grand Rapids, Flint Powers, Haslett) 3A: 376 to 625 (Examples: Kingsley, Manistee, Montague, Saginaw Nouvel) 2A: 184 to 375 (Examples: Climax-Scotts, Manistee CC for football only, Muskegon CC, TC St. Francis) 1A: 183 and below (Examples: Ashley - likely moves to 8-man FB, Carsonville-Port Sanilac - plays 8-man FB, Jackson Christian - soccer school, Tri-unity Christian - FB plays in 2A)

In the current system used for Playoff Points (POP), if you beat a Class A team, you get more bonus points than beating a Class B team. I think that if you do use the system you recomended that you would have to even out the POP system. I know that there is some discrepentcy in the talent and level of competition between the larger and smaller schools. Maybe you could break it into two classes; Class A would be the teams required to participate in the "Super Division", and have slightly more bonus points. And Class B would be teams that can opt out of the "Super Division".

I only see 2-4 teams in d3 that could possibly, and I say possibly, be talked about being competitive with the top dogs. I think it is very possible that the list of quality D2 teams will be much deeper than D1.

I've spent a lot of time over the years chatting with people on a Texas site .... I bet if you took a poll more people in Michigan would be overall pleased with our current system than they are the Texas system. There are some strange things that happen with the Texas system such as .... The way the districts work it's possible to have larger schools in 5A-2 than 5A-1 A few years back their #1 team ended up in 5A-2 despite being undefeated and larger than some schools that played in 5A-2 Plus good luck getting the public schools to accept the privates into their district ... FYI ... Texas has separate playoffs for private schools ... But the privates are technically allowed to join with the publics ... But the other one is that you set up zones within a 5-10 mile radius from the campus and say that all players living within that zone are "district students", and those living outside are "Non-District students". And you would have it set up that if a private school plays a public school, players that are outside the district zone cant play for that week. ie: DCC is playing Novi, since they are roughly in the same area, the students living there have the choice between the two, but when you start getting players from Detroit and Ann Arbor, i think its kinda an unfair advantage.

But I think the not allowing players to compete certain weeks is a little far fetched ... Would that also mean an Austin White type who played in the CYO couldn't suit up against CC? Using CC as an example ... Are they more likely to play a close team like Novi at some point or a team from farther away .... Say Holt, Traverse City Central or Saginaw? If anything it would prevent the kids from schools right around the school from attending as opposed to those ''60 miles away'' If they went that way I'd propose that the Catholic school is entitled to all the families that belong to a Catholic Parish in a specified region assigned to each school ... But I'm not sure where that leaves the non-religious schools. if they imposed this and the Private schools formed their association it would be cool to see them lighten up some rules ... Such as for travel, add Spring football and other things that hold MHSAA schools back compared to other states... Hey why not legalize recruiting (just have it regulated such as NCAA) Imagine how many more good players would opt for a stronger private school assoc as opposed to the MHSAA. In fact there is a public school in Sterling Heights whose HC owns an apartment complex in the district that has been known to house many a transfer over the years. Besides who would want to win a state title that excluded private schools? It would not be the same considering all of the top programs in the state that are private schools.

If there were, I bet it would be because the parents chose that school for its academics and environment not its sports. That's a choice they should have. Of course, once enrolled in the school, the student has the right to play sports if he or she so chooses. The anti-privates need to get over it and work to improve their own program.
