I went "other" My other is Zeeland West. Just because I am not sold on anybody else on the list and I will take my chances with Shilito.

I chose Country Day. They are the two time defending runner-up and haven't won a title since D5 back in '99. They should be hungry to get back again.

Whether or not to add Zeeland West was a tough decision .... but I decided against it for the same reasons I didn't include past "powers" such as
Allen Park and Harrison in their respective division polls.
I guess I wouldn't be surprised to see them back at Ford Field in the end... Vote for 2009 MHSAA Football Conference Winners New Conference Polls to be added throughout this summer. I went with Kingsford. Well coached ball club. Not real sure on D4 this year, any one team doesnt jump out at me. Flivvers have come close lately maybe this
year they get over the hump. Good a chance as anybody I guess. Coopersville might be good, Marine City, Catholic Central, those teams came to mind as well.

The higher you go up in divisions, the tougher it gets for a UP team to succeed in the playoffs I think. Every once in a while, you'll see one of them
push through and win it all, but not very often. I remember Kingsford being hyped up big time back in 2004 with their stingy defense and UP Power that year,
and they were dominated from beginning to end by an OV team that took their superstar QB and backup QB out with their hard hitting defense. There always seems
to be a team from the lower peninsula that has played a tougher schedule and will ultimately knock off an undermanned and untested Kingsford team. My opinion
only.

OV team that took their superstar QB and backup QB out with their hard hitting defense. I was at that game and OV did dominate. However, as I recall, Kingsford scored first in that game, but once they lost their stud QB, it was over. Might the outcome been different had it been OV that lost their stud RB? You can credit the OV Defense if you wish, but Injuries happen. The higher you go up in divisions, the tougher it gets for a UP team to succeed in the playoffs I think. Every once in a while, you'll see one of them push through and win it all, but not very often. The reason for this is that there are so few U.P. teams above D7! Look into it and compare how many D4 schools there are in the U.P. compared to the L.P. And the higher up you go enrollment wise... the fewer U.P. schools there are.

What does GRCC have back besides the dual threat QB? It was the GRCC Defense that struggled in the playoff's last year, gave up 35 points to Kingsford and
38 to Holland christian.

trezdustrial wrote:Injuries happen, yes, but Short's long run (lol) in that game was a defensive breakdown by OV, and after a talk with coach, things were corrected. Would there have been more scores for Kingsford and less for OV had Short not gone out....possibly. But I seem to remember many people outside of the Muskegon area heading into that game picking Kingsford to knock off OV. It probably would have been closer, but the outcome was never in doubt, even before the game happened. My whole quote was just a general statement, as I was really referring to Kingsford. They are given way too much credit for being world beaters year after year and how they will beat teams that I really don't see them beating, and they end up losing. They don't live up to the hype that many people put on them. |

Lansing Sexton could be a threat. Their enrollment has dropped to the low 800's, which should put them in Div 4. The have a very good returning QB. They
have very good speed and if they can fill a few holes on the line, they will be for real. Most of their league games are against Class A schools so they will
have strong playoff points if they win.

Interesting on Sexton ... I didn't realize they had dropped so low in enrollment

Sexton could be the sleeper. While they lost some linemen, they are very athletic at their skilled positions. I am sure they can find some linemen. They are a
threat both in the air and on the ground. The fact that they play a almost all Class A schedule doesn't hurt them either. Holt and Mason might be their
biggest test in regular play. I noticed the enrollment number in the Michigan High School Football site is not right.

I don't think I'd wager on any one of those teams "against the field". Holland Christian was so dominant last year, but can they do it again
without that QB?
For the record, this "complete Marine City homer" is not one of the 2 votes for the Mariners. It's not that I don't think they have a chance of doing it (they should be very strong) but like I said, it's tough to pick one team against the field in this division. I said Coopersville. Why? They're due. |

I am a Holland Christian homer. HC will once again have a dominant defense, but offensively they will not be near as potent. The quarterbacks they have
will be average. They are very good in the skilled positions. O-line will be a question. Defense, they will be very good on the line and linebackers and
db's. They will probably not outscore anyone this year. They will win by tough D. I vote for Marine City and my second pick is DCD. GRCC has issues
with their defense. If they shore the D, then they may make a solid run at it. I say HC to Regionals vs. GRCC. Marine City to Regionals vs. DCD. Finals are
GRCC vs. Marine City. Marine City will be D4 State champs!

samaroon wrote:I sure hope you're right. The Mariners bring back a lot of players from a 10-1 season in 2008. They could put up big offensive numbers last season but they have some work to do on the defensive side of the ball (they lost so much on D to graduation from the 2007 title team that it wasn't surprising that they struggled in 2008 - especially in the speed department). They do not, however, have that one block-buster player like HC last season, or like Marine City had on the 2007 title team. If they go the distance, it will require every position on the field to be playing as well as they can possibly play. Should be a very good season, regardless of how deep they go in the playoffs. |
