The division is MC's for the taking. Kudos to them for a lopsided victory in what i thought was gonna be a close game. Heartbreaking loss for the Dragons.
Offense sputtered in 2nd half. D forced 4 turnovers and a 3 and out with 1:30 left but gave up 20 points in 4th. Clintondale had first and goal with 2 minutes
left but fumbled the snap. Defense holds SC to a three and out, using two timeouts. C Dale takes over at SC 15 yd line with 45 seconds lefts. 2 plays later
lined up for a 15 yd FG with 7 seconds left. Holder drops it but johnson gets out of bounds with one tic left. Bootleg pass with open recievers but Johnson
reverses field and tries to run....sack....game over. Great win for SC welcoming back their coach that had a stroke. 2nd heartbreaker for Dragons in a row.
Will they beat the clem???????

I just can't give the Dragons any respect after losing to Cros-Lex last year in the playoffs. I went to the game and the Dragons looked like garbage except
for a couple moments in the last quarter when they tried to make a game of it. Granted, they looked better against Cros-Lex than Fordson looked against Lake
Orion (the other game I went to)...but it's FRIGGIN CROS-LEX for cryin out loud!! The Mariners haven't lost to Cros Lex in what, 18 years or
something...and they used to play em every year. Rediculous.

If you were there, you might have noticed the mud pit on the field. Not an excuse for the loss but the dragons strength were their two scholarship D-ends last
year and a quick DT. They couldnt get any pass rush at all and the RBs couldnt cut like they did the week before at MC while piling up 500 rushing yds. The
conditions played to Croswells favor. Buncha big slow lineman who's only chance was to get chest to chest with a dlineman. The runners for Cros werent as
fast as the cdale ones, thus werent as affected by the sloppy conditions. A slow jeep moves much better in the mud than a mustang. Just sayin

FSU, I agree that the conditions were horrible for Clintondale's speed game. But Cros-Lex was predominantly a spread passing team. They were handicapped by
the weather as well.
I can't get the thought out of my head that the Dragons just had let downs after big games. Maybe I'm wrong, and you'd know better than me, but they lost to CL after a tight game at Marine City. Earlier in the season, they snuck out a 21-20 win against a horrible L'Anse Creuse team, one week after losing a tight one in Marine City. Is there any validity to my thinking here? |

FSUdawg06 wrote: The only reason I can't accept that as an excuse is that it's their field. The Mariners incorporate a lot of fakes into thier offense...so guess what, they rarely play Satuday afternoon games because the night plays to their advantage. If Clintondale can't play defense on a wet field, then shame on their coaching staff and grounds crew for not getting out there with mops and squeegies to make sure it was as little an issue as possible. That and Cros Lex just wasn't as good as they looked against Clintondale. They had a nice record baecause they play in the weakest league south of the Mackinac bridge. I mean, Country Day smashed em and in my opinion (because I'm not a Dragon-hater), so SHOULD HAVE Clintondale. But, that's what makes 1-game playoffs so fun, ya just never know until ya play the game. I was just disappointed because I really would have liked to see what Clintondale could have done against Country Day on a dry field...would have been interesting and a better representation of the strength of the MAC Gold. |

Dragon coaches tried to get the game moved to Fraser (field turf) but were shutdown. AD tried to rent a tarp from MCC for the field but SOMEBODY didnt want to put it up. Trust me when i tell you that the conditions werent the fault of the coaches. Plenty of blame to go around but they saw the potential problem on monday of that week. I agree with 100% of your post thought. Shouldnt have even been a close game. My brother coaches for Cdale and was VERY frustrated with how it played out. Cdale/Det country day would have been a coin flip, IMO but Holland was pretty darn good. |

Atticus,
Definite valididty but i dont think that was the case in the Crosswell game. That Barrett may as well have been raised in the mud the way he was running around. Literally inches, on about 4 occasions kept the Dragons from winning. And a crucial fumble by the QB with 2 min left in Dragon territory while trying to run out the clock. 10 men on the field for an extra point was the difference. Had they had 11, the fg by Barrett would have sent the game into overtime. |

I was at the Cros-Lex v. Country Day game, and have these thoughts:
1. I couldn't believe that Clintondale lost to Cros-Lex, but did think Cros-Lex was well coached (see "let-down" theory in earlier post). 2. Neither Clintondale nor Marine City could have beaten that Country Day team. Clintondale was athletic, but nothing compared to what DCD carted out onto the field. A running team like Clintondale, I don't think, would have been able to move the ball on DCD. Country Day's backs would have had a field day against the 2008 Mariner defense. 3. Nobody in D4 was fit to carry Holland Christian's jock, so it didn't matter who faced them in Ford Field, the crown was theirs. |

Atticus,
1) Agreed. They were well coached. 2) I think it was a toss up. I saw DCD struggle heavily vs Det. Southwestern in a very low scoring game. 3)agree 100%. Holland christain was the cream of the crop. |

I think MC or even Clintondale would have stood a chance against Country Day. MC beat em in the State finals when Country Day was heavily favored, so they
aren't all that they are hyped to be. That being said, Holland Christian was pretty much unbeatable by any team in the division, unfortunately.

So, FSUdawg, what are you thinking about tonight's game?

Should be a good one. The move for Johnson from QB to RB is paying off for the dragons. Their young lines on both sides of the ball are coming around. It is
much tougher to prepare for johnson and about 10 plays than it is to just take away the boot and sweep. The new QB is looking good....great faker and accurate
with the football (3 tds on 5 attempts). I thought Allemon really held MC in both games last year with some unbelievable plays and losing them hurts.
Clintondale lost #4 as well but still have their main playmaker in Johnson. Should be a great game and i have to take my dragons in a close one at home. Think
the same drama as last year but scores in the 20's instead of the 40's. Should be a wet one and from what ive read, the mariners have been heavily
relying on Nickerson's legs this year. WDIV and MTV will be in attendance from what im hearing. Good luck to both teams. What are you thinking?

Not 100% sure what to think. Marine City's defense has some serious work to do, but they seem fairly solid when they're not playing a team with a
strong passing threat. Johnson, however, is a threat against any defense, good or bad. I think they'll have trouble containing him, but will probably key
on him until someone else shows that they can hurt them.
Marine City's offense just has so many guys who can hurt you. Nickerson hasn't been the biggest threat out there, thus far; Scarcelli has. But in that Clawson game, Nickerson showed he certainly can break a game open with his legs. But the Ellul kid (sp?) has shown to be a tough runner, as has Kleckner and others. As usual, I think Clintondale's biggest challenge is in choosing what they want to take away, and hoping the Mariners don't beat them with something else. I don't see anyone in the Gold holding Marine City to fewer than 28 points. But Marysville surprised me by holding them to 25, and conditions will be wet tonight, so who knows. If I had to pick a score, I'd take Marine City 35 Dragons 28. I won't be surprised by anything...other than a low scoring game (and even that won't surprise me, I suppose, if the weather stays as poor as it is right now). EDIT: I didn't even mention Abrams, who clearly is someone you have to worry about at all times, especially on short yardage plays. And and afterthought - I like Marine City's advantage in the muck. Why? I'd hate to be the poor guy whose job it is to try and push Steve Churhan around on dry land. Add a slick to the mess and I think he will be absolutely dominant. He really doesn't get enough credit for the yards/points that Marine City racks up.

on your edits:
Sorry to say but Abrams is overrated. He is an outstanding short yardage back but he is not gamebreaking threat at all. No siginficant speed or lateral movement. No way he compares to alleman. He is a tough SOB and a guy i want on my team but he's not gonna be the threat scarcelli is. If you think Churhan is tough, wait till you see 6'5 270 lb Leterrius Walton who is being heavily recruited by the Big 10 for football and athletic enough to be a 4 year starting shortstop and getting D1 looks at that sport too. That being said churhan is a very tough player. Should be a great game! |

I'm still debating if I will be there, FSU. It's getting harder and harder justifying the time away from family with young kids at home. If I do go, I
agree that it should be good, I just don't know what to expect. The Walton kid sounds like a beast; I'll be sure to watch for him if I'm there.
Oh, and I don't think Abrams is overrated. He plays his role, which isn't that of a big play RB, like Allemon was and Scarcelli is. He makes teams worry about the holes between the tackles, which gives guys lik Scarcelli a better chance to break it big. And besides, from all reports (I've never personally met him), Abrams is about the highest quality kid you could ever hope to meet - I will never say a negative word about a kid like that.

Abrams is a great kid. Extremely hard worker that puts it all on the field. Its not abrams fault but he was highly highly tauted as a youngster coming up. He
is not a college running back, maybe fullback but not a halfback. He is no Rivard, who couldnt make it through a year at GV but was one heck of a FB in high
school. The thing marine city does to win so consistently is run about 100 formations and get the defense thinking. Kudo's to the coaching staff for doing
it and the kids for being committed enough to run it. Im afraid that if both these teams ran the same T offense, it wouldnt even be a game. MC's main
strength is smoke and mirrors and its an absolutely brilliant move. When you break down the talent, however, clintondale has put about 10x more kids through a
free college education than MC has. If im a MC fan, im worried about what will happen when those coordinators retire. I dont know if they get the credit they
deserve (from what i hear they have been taking heat). The o-coordinator may be the best in the state.

Rivard was very tough; the best RB I've ever seen suit up in the orange and black, I think.
The coaching staff and the community is clearly why Marine City has the program that they have, not the talent level. Since I've been old enough to pay attention to such things, I can only name two kids ever to receive D1 football scholarships coming out of Marine City, and only one (off the top of my head) who went full ride D1 in basketball (Wes Kamer to MSU for football; Brendon Kay to Cincinnati for football; and Andy Shorky to Sienna for basketball). To me, that is something for the kids to be proud of; they win because they are a team...a great program...not because they were graced with some supernatural speed or size. It takes character to build that kind of program sans the D1 talent. Granted, it did take a freak of nature, in the form of Kay, to finally put them over the hump and bring in a state title. |

Dont get me wrong, I have the utmost respect for MC and i know that current players do as well. The record the have accumulated the last 15 years is nothing
short of spectacular. The dedication of the players, support of the community, and innovation of the coaching all take an equal share in this. It is absolutely
something to be proud of. Its kind of ironic, the recent rivalry between MC and clintondale. Clintondale has a very nuetral community (bordering on the edge of
negativity) and has players that, for the most part, do not have MC's offseason dedication. I would say about 40% of clintondale's roster came to the
school in the past 3 years and 0% have played middle school football. The mc coaches must work to hide the talent and the clintondale coaches must work to
bring the kids up to speed in about 1/2 the time. Its a mental advantage vs a physical advantage. Very interesting when you look at the differences between the
schools. I know that both schools respect each other immensly though.

The way things look out my office window right now, I think we're in for an old fashioned mud scrum on Clintondale's natural turf. I'm hoping to be
there to see it.

Well, I made it to the game. I sure hope Walton's injury, with less than a minute to play, down by 24 points, isn't too serious. Why on earth was he in
the game at that point? Why were all the starters in until the final whistle for the Dragons, playing against MC's backups? Why on earth would a coach call
time out with 19 seconds to go in the game, trailing by 24 points? Was he trying to prove something? He accomplished that, but I don't think what he proved
was what he set out to prove. That little cuteness nearly cost him another 7, as I thought for sure that MC corner was going to take the INT to the house;
that's what the coach deserved on that play, so I was really hoping for it.
But Walton was as you described. A mountain of a kid with a lot of skills. Is he a senior this year? PS - I was more impressed with Abrams on D for Marine City than I was with Johnson on O for Clintondale. |
