This year's WILDCARD... |

|
Going into the playoffs, it's pretty easy to see who some of the favorites are, but of the things that can offer a surprise upset (like weather, for
instance) the one that I think could be a real pisser this year is......SWINE FLU! It is spreading across school campi pretty rampant here on the west side.
Several schools are closing for 3 days this week. More are sure to come. My kids said that some of their classes are only half full. I realize that the flu is
an equal opportunity spoiler but all it would take is for a highly ranked team's QB or star RB to be out for 1 game to end the season when the competition
is other playoff caliber teams. So, I'm wondering how many upsets we might see from this kind of thing.

I can hear the cheers now:
We've got fevers, yes we do. We've got fevers, How 'bout you? EDIT: Okay, I'm reading this thread again, and I'm embarrassed for posting that above. Considering how many people have been touched by the flu, and the degree to which they've had to deal with it, I shouldn't have made light of it. I'm going to chalk it up to just being goofy -- running on fumes in the sleep department -- while waiting for MHSAA to get/post results.

GR Catholic had it last week (hit us where it hurts - def line and lb), but that may have only been the first wave.
Questions encouraged. Will respond to 'what ifs'
about particular teams.

Wasn't it 2002 when Jackson Lumen Christi was named the "Subway team of the week" after their Regional Title win against Three Rivers? 20+
players got food poisoning from the party sub they won, and they went on to lose to Riverview the following week. At least that's how I remember the story.

At least that's how I remember the story.Your memory is close. The Three Rivers football supporters provided Subway for the JLC kids on their ride home. As you point out, more than 20 kids got sick, and JLC lost the next week to Riverview in the semis. They just ran out of steam after halftime. However, to be fair, the virus was never traced to the Subway in Three Rivers. JLC kids now tend not to eat food supplied by the home team, though. And I would not be surprised to see one or two teams lose unexpectedly due to the flu. There have been a ton of schools closed already, and its very early in the flu season. Interesting topic. I never even considered what an impact H1N1 could be. Especially considering that for some odd reason many people(around 50 percent in MI)
do not want to get the vaccine.

Vaccine is not healthy for you.....up your intake of Vitamins D and C and you will be fine. Plenty of info out there but here is a start:

Well, my kids now have the swine flu (or at least they are sick and someone they've been in contact with has a confirmed case). They're not high school
age, but it shows that it's here in Macomb/St. Clair counties.
EDIT: but the people who my kids have been in contact with, who have been confirmed as having H1N1, are high school age. They do not, however, attend a high school that has to worry about what contracting the flu will do to their playoff hopes.

Grand Rapids TV has a scrolling list at the bottom with all the local school closings. Many shut down thru Monday. Not sure if this is going to directly impact
football games or not. One school has explicitly cancelled everything EXCEPT Varsity football. The rest don't really state what they're going to do.
You would probably have to call the athletic office. I'll bet if there are teams with no playoffs riding on the line, we'll see some forfeits. I can
only imagine the decisions being made in AD's offices for teams on the playoff bubble.
Just wondering, if both teams agree to cancel the game, due to flu, how will MHSAA treat this........a loss for both teams? refigure as an 8 gamer schedule? Anybody know? |

If I recall right, all games must be completed on Saturday and be reported by Saturday as well so the MHSAA can organize the playoff divisions, regions,
districts, etc. If my memory is right, once upon a time the CHSL played their championship or PSL crossover game (Goodwill game) on Sunday, but that changed
when the playoffs started or the MHSAA put in that requirement sometime.

I think you're right but but how will they treat a mutual cancellation, especially if this becomes more widespread....losses or reduction to 8 game
schedule?
Two games in this area with some playoff implications (point standings at least) have already been moved to Saturday specifically due to swine flu. the games are Ottawa Hills v Hastings and Caledonia v Middleville. What happens (and mind you, this is just hypothetical) if during the playoffs, neither team can go due to illnesses? Someone's gotta move on, right? Or are they both out and the next week's team gets a bye? None of this has happened yet and maybe never will, but I wonder what the MHSAA has planned if it does.

Well, the MHSAA has actually started thinking about Swine Flu as well. They have drafted an "Epidemic Emergency Plan". Interesting...
...a portion of which states..... 2. For MHSAA tournaments, within the restrictions of the governing health authority, the MHSAA executive director or designee will determine which, if any, schools within that county may host MHSAA events and which, if any, schools' students and spectators may participate in interscholastic events at other locations within the county or in other counties not directly affected by the health authorities' restrictions. a. Schools and students who, as a result of these decisions, are unable to participate according to published MHSAA tournament schedules and policies will forfeit the scheduled competition to opponents who will advance in the tournament progression. b. However, the authority and decisions of the executive director or designee in these circumstances supersedes the MHSAA tournament policy that specifies rescheduling in some sports when more than 40 percent of the contestants are prevented by an emergency or act of God from participating at the scheduled time and place. To minimize gamesmanship and disruption of previously agreed upon schedules on which students, parents, officials and tournament workers have based their planning, and to avoid situations where one level of the tournament is unable to produce a team to advance to the next level of the tournament, the MHSAA strongly advises against delaying events by mutual agreement of competing teams and host schools. Scheduled MHSAA tournament dates will be followed. Adhering to established schedules will do most to reduce chaos and promote competitive equity. Special accommodations will not be made later for those who create delay at earlier rounds of a tournament.
