After Friday, I was leaning towards Southgate Anderson over Wyandotte Roosevelt...but the Redford Thurston over Detroit MLK game I just can't believe. On
paper, it just doesn't make sense. But I guess, "That's Why They Play the Games"...

Interesting that you think that the Ithaca game an upset since they were 8 - 1 vs. 6 - 3 for Grandville CC. Not only that but Ithaca was in one of the better playoffs categories percentage wise i. e. the top ranked team in their district. I think Redford Thurston's win over Detroit MLK has to be up there since it came on the road and was their first playoff win I think (since I don't think that they have won a playoff game from several years ago against Fowlerville when I looked this up). |

Mr NCAA wrote:I don't want to be too picky, because it is a good topic. But Calvin makes the playoffs solely because they schedule the biggest non-conference cupcakes they can find. The 6 teams they beat this year won a grand total of 7 games, and I think 4 of those were conference wins against the other crappy teams in their conference. They've done this for awhile ... sacrificing having any chance of winning in the playoffs for actually making the playoffs. Hopefully they'll learn soon.

Of the list, I'd say Ithaca and Chelsea could be debated as perhaps not even being upsets.
But...let's not give Ithaca too much credit, they played 2 quality teams all season and lost one of them. So they didn't have a "World beating" schedule either. I guess I just gave Calvin the nod because they played a very good Kellogsville and held their own. Did anybody see the MLK game? I still can't figure that one out. Fordson...well, after watching them play dead to Lake Orion last year, I guess that doesn't surprise me much. AND, I think the quality coming out of the Detroit schools is much improved this year. But wow, big surprise with MLK. That totally spins my bracket around with both Roosevelt and MLK losing. Probably the team that benefits the most is Grosse Point North which now might be the favorite to come out of that side. Good news for us MAC fans! But...who knows? With Redford beating MLK, maybe they become the favorite? Maybe Southgate Anderson? Or maybe I'm dead wrong about Inkster and they're as good as their 51-19 stomping of Edsel Ford? |

It could be debated if some of those are upsets ... there's only one result when I heard it that really made me turn my head.
CT over Fordson. |

I'd vote Romeo over Grand Blanc. No offense to Romeo but Grand Blanc wouldn't have been a surprise D1 winner, were undefeated in pretty convincing
fashion and were at home. That one surprised me. The other one that surprised me was Crockett over Highland Park. All we heard about all year was HP's D
was da bomb. Yet, in this game it sounds as though Crockett's D outplayed them handily. HP was another one that many thought could make it to FF. Have
heard no such talk on Crockett. So, again, surprised me.

I voted too quickly--picking the Cass Tech upset of Fordson. I actually think Crockett's win over Highland was more shocking. And Thurston over King was
a big surprise. Re-thin king my vote, I would go 1. Crockett, 2. Thurston, 3. Cass Tech.

I'd say Romeo's win was a small upset ...
While GB was the favorite .. The result wasn't that surprising to me. |

I don't want to sound too nit picky, but Ithaca did have a higher CPA number compared to 4 other #1 seeds in their division. So at least 3 other division
teams played weaker schedules since they have the same won loss record as Ithaca does.

Gotta believe it was Cass Tech over Fordson.
#1 I am not a believer in the quality of PSL FB. #2 I think all the Fordson fan hype actually bored into my brain and I started thinking they might actuall have something going. |

I was truly surprised by CT over Fordson, and Crockett over HP.
I thought Romeo had a great shot at beating Grand Blanc! 1) There Defense gave up a lot of points this year 2) They are a spread out team in a bad weather situation These are the same reasons I don't expect Sterling Heights Stevenson to end up at Ford Field. Put a team with a great defense and a ball control offense against them, and there could be trouble. Of course if a team like that gets down early you might as well call it a game. |

Cass Tech (5-3) came back to beat a 9-0 Fordson team. But the WWAC is probably one of the weakest Class A conferences in the state because, in addition to
Fordson's loss, Edsel (8-1) got smoked by 5-3 indy Inkster, who had to win five of their last six just to qualify.

I think that most people expected Inkster to beat Dearborn Edsel Ford despite what prepseer wrote in his blog.

Definitely Cass Tech over Fordson.
Big Toe is spinning in his grave after getting beat by the school of Vernon Gholston, Lily Tomlin, and King Kwame. |

Well... up here it was Escanaba over Cadillac. Especially considering Esky struggled in games with bad field conditions and against teams that could run the
ball as well as Cadillac. Also throw into the mix that other then a win over a Sault Ste Marie team that played Class C teams all year this is the first
playoff win for this Esky coach in 25 years.

A Red flag was thrown to the Big North league though when Cadillac Cars lost to Bay City John Glenn in the first game. So it was like a warning signal for
that game since Cadillac did win that league.

I was in no way surprised by Romeo beating Grand Blanc. I really thought Highland Park would beat Crocket, however.

WB Ogema Heights with the 8-0 win over a solid Petoskey team was an upset.
Vassar over Flint Beecher shook me up pretty good. So did the Crockett victory over Highland Park. Romeo over Grand Blanc was not really an upset, only because of location. I had Ithaca to win. I thought Fowlerville would drop Lansing Sexton at home and I picked Chelsea to win. I also liked Southgate Anderson over Wyandotte Roosevelt and was Shrine losing really an upset? Nobody thought Hazel Park winning at St Clair Shores Lake Shore was unexpected? What about Flint Powers over Croswell Lexington or Durand dropping Laingsburg? The shock was Dearborn Fordson floundering again... I know it shouldn't be a surprise but once again, it was. What happened to Walled Lake Central, they didn't even put up a fight. |

I somewhat expected the Powers win. I give Cros-Lex credit, if you look at the stats, it looks like they just got unlucky in that game. Powers appears to have
really struggled moving the ball. Anyone know how Powers scored their TD? Was it a short field situation, or was it one of the very few good drives they put
together (I think Powers only had 5 first downs all game, and scored only once, that doesn't sound like a very good offensive outing).

MrObvious2 wrote:I agree. OK-Silver conference opponent Allendale pummeled Calvin Christian 42-8. Allendale didn't even make the playoffs. Why? Allendale did the opposite of Calvin Christian. They scheduled strong non-conference opponents - Grand Rapids West Catholic, Muskegon Catholic Central, and Hudsonville Unity Christian. |
