Probably going to be the last high school football game I see in a while...what a way to end it.

Although the officiating was horrible (this coming from an LO fan rooting for Stevenson).

That is unfortunately the name of the game OAA...Yes, bad calls suck...But anyone that whines about the downing of the ball that fracassa supposedly fumbled is
ridiculous..Its a bang bang play and most officials would not see that...The fumble call was bad..No argument from me...But you know what? Stop trying for more
yard when they are not needed..Go down and hang on to the ball...
With all that said, I really think Clarkston is a great team...But I personally would rather watch Fracassa vs CC...That kid is unbelievable... |

As a high school fan, I was excited to watch this game between two great teams. I was not disappointed.
I ended up pullling for Clarkston as the game moved along. I thought they were a classy crew, and frankly, I was disappointed with the antics of the Stevenson kids as the game went on. Chippy play and lots of complaining by Stevenson really turned me off. I also thought the Clarkston coach created the problems for his team at the end. I still cannot fathom why he just did not go into victory formation, and punt with roughly 10 seconds left on fourth down. Poor clock management by Clarkston, IMO. That being said, I'll be pulling for CC in the finals. "The common man revels in HAVING WON. The champion finds his satisfaction in WINNING." - F.H. Yost

I saw the game live and was on the five yard line for that last series and thought I saw Fracassa fumble, but wasn't sure. So I've dl'ed the game from mhsaa.tv, blew it up on the big screen (OK....gotta flex my man-ego here....just picked up a new Sony 52" LCD today, so I am on a little football on TV honeymoon right now) and granted, some Clarkston mistakes were made, BUT...After replaying the Clarkston fumble about 20 times, it sure looked like the kid was on his back when the Stevenson kid put the rip on the ball. But a big ol lineman was blocking enough of the camera angle to call it irrefutable, to use the NFL standard. But when you look at the Fracassa spike, with 0.4 seconds, it is painfully obvious there was no spike whatsover. He fumbled, gave a two handed slap on the ball as it lay on the turf and then did a heck of a job selling it as a spike. Shoulda been game over. And I didn't have a dog in this fight at all. This was the second time I'd seen Stevenson this year and the third I had seen Clarkston. I'm wishing Clarkston would have gotten the nod because I think they would give CC a better game. And I agree, Fracassa is something special. The CHS staff may want to take note and see how Mach handles him. I think you'll see a different approach....perhaps a new thread? |

Tommy,
I agree on the spike, with respect to "real time" call. I watched it on TV and was hot and bothered by the call, but of course, I had the benefit of instant replay. I cannot blame the ref on that call. BUT, here is what I view as the mistake made by the official. He wanted so badly to be "right" that he did not give himself a chance to be 100% "right. What I mean by that is, the official was so intent on being "right" with the clock knowing that SHS was going to spike the ball and making sure that he was keeping the time on the field as opposed to scorekeeper in the box, that he failed to view the actual snap/play take place. It looked to me like he was more intent on turning up and toward the box to signal time left than viewing the actual play to it's conclusion. Just a thought! But damn, what a great game! |

i watched the end of this game online, and although i havnt actually heard any clarkston slappies complain about the fumble or the 'spike,' both calls
i feel that wrongly went against clarkston, i dont want to hear them complain because they had a chance to end the game. take a knee, fall on the ball, and the
clock would have run out (by my count, that is). if it came to fourth down or anything, it would have been no more than 4 or 5 seconds, in which you can run
backwards until the clock is out. they won the game. and bad calls or not, they lost it too.

1:54 Clarkston throws a play action passes up the middle for a first down. Clock stops long enough to move chains. Clock is signaled to begin as Clarkston approaches LOS 1st and ten, the ball is snapped, but a Clarkston time out is whistled with 1:26 on the clock Clarkston returns from T.O. and Bender gains 3. Clock continues to move. (One would think if the SHS staff thought that Clarkston was NOT going to run the ball here, they would have spent their last time out at this point????) On second and 7, ball is snapped at 45 seconds (35 seconds elapsed since last whistle), fumble happens at 38 seconds…. If Clarkston takes a knee on second and 7 at the 45 second mark, instead of running the play, and SHS calls a time out, they return with a stopped clock at 45 seconds. They take another knee, they get the clock down to 10 seconds before 4th down when they have to take a delay call and punt or run backwards to a safety. Kinda scary too. And I don't think Clarkston had any time outs left….not sure. But, sitting on that second and seven, knowing that a first down means the ball is not getting in Fracassas hands again isn't stupid, either.Coach had a tough decision to make, but I don't think it is fair to say he blew it. |

Just watched the replay on MHSAA.tv and have to say Clarkston got hosed. Both calls were terrible ... I think if the Referee was paying any attention he would
have seen Fracassa did not spike that ...
Clarkston probably brought some of it on themselves by not just trying to run it out, but that game was pretty well yanked away from them. Refs get either one of those right and they win.

There were some bad calls in this game, and it seems like the bigger ones hurt Clarkston.
What concerns me now is wondering how often calls are wrongly mad or missed in HS ballgames. Was this a rare occasion that also just happened to be televised and made visible to all? Or was this a pretty status quo called game that just happened to be televised? Does this type of stuff happen a lot and we just don't really know it because there's no public view of the game? Those that see game films, you see bad calls a lot after the fact? |

Pav,
As one who watches quite a bit of film, the short answer is yes. The big difference here is that you had 3 "controversial" calls in a very short amount of time and with the outcome of the game in the balance. |

i still think there can be no complaining. the game was over. yes they were terrible calls, but clarkston put themselves into that position.

You gotta go to www.mhsaa.tv and it should be right on the front page.

My guess is windwardho simply has his TV set up as a second monitor and is able to view it that way. That's how I do it. He may not have literally meant
"download" it.

No question here that pathetic officiating allows Stevenson to play on.
Weak stuff TZ. |
