OGT: Lowell vs. Inkster |

Should be a thriller! Noel Dean vs. Greg Carter makes for an interesting side story too-two of the state's most distinguished coaches going head to head
for the first time that I'm aware of.

19-6 Arrows at halftime. Lowell's OL owning the LOS so far. Inkster's going to have to do something defensively to control the read option, or they
won't have the opportunity to catch up.

Domination by the Arrows. Didn't get to see nearly as much as I'd hoped, but the few drives I did catch were pretty impressive.

I was disappointed by what appeared to be the lack of any significant O & D halftime adjustments by Inkster. Dean contunued to have his way in the second
half as the Ink D continued to collapse on Graham. I actually have to give the ILB's credit for the way they continued to fill on Graham even as they were
left virtually unprotected by the DL. Ink OLB's/DE's simply did not adjust through the course of the game, unable to maintain a modicum of disciplined,
assignment football.
I was also surprised that the Ink O looked very stale and uncreative, even after they fell further behind. No play action no counter action of any significance. Not even an occasional reverse or use of slots in the run game. It was all outside zone, roll out or straight drop. Why not a little mix of QB counter action with a trap or 2 to try and spring Gardner in the running game? I also kept thinking that Gardner must still be hampered by the groin injury as he looked a step or two slow. Tommyz - you have watched Ink throughout the year. Was their playbook really that limited? All that said, all the credit in the world has to go to Lowell for staying in an effective offensive rhythm and methodicaly taking what the D was giving them. On D, Lowell was very disciplined, flowed very well to ball and with excellent pursuit angles. Was anyone else surprised and impressed with how well the Lowell CB's played on both pass and run support? Very nice corners! |

I had read awhile back that the kid was only starting because he was the coach's nephew and that the offense was "broken" whenever he was taking the snaps.

Nice win for Lowell ...
I was actually expecting Lowell to win something like 42-21 and for Inkster to have more offense and exciting big plays .... |

I just want to take a moment and take up for Greg Carter . First of all let me say that Inkster was outplayed on both sides of the ball and deserved to lose.
Coach Carter will need to spend more time improving his line play O and D. He will not consistantly win the big one in the upper divisions without it. I have
been bothered by the double standards about him especially on M-live. Its seems like when he wins its because he has all this talent and he just out-talented
everybody. When he loses its because his teams are poorly coached and undisiplined
People seems to forget that this is his 5 th state championship game this decade two with DePorres and three with Inkster. Now granted he is on a four game losing streak going back to DePorres last year but at least he is getting there. Personally I don't think that with the exception of Gardner this was one of his better teams. I also think that because of the league situation he had to overschedule and the 2100 miles and injuries did wear his team down toward the end. Also lets be real, the places where Carter kids come from they don't see a lot of option offenses in their little leagues like PAL and they don't get a lot of experience playing against the veer offenses that the west side of the state likes to play. One big advantage that Carter had that he doesn't have now is that he coached against the good CHSL competition which enabled him to play and beat the Hudson's, Beal City's and Mendon's of the state. If Carter stays at Inkster and I heard some rumblings that he might not be all that happy there I'm convinced he will have them back in the championship game on a regular basis I just hope people start giving the man credit for being a good coach and not just a recruiter of talent. |

I also think that because of the league situation he had to overschedule and the 2100 miles and injuries did wear his team down toward the end.I agree with this. Some small college teams don't travel as much as Inkster did this year. That had to take a toll. Three long bus rides to Ohio? Give me a break, most of us would be busted in half having to ride a bus that far one time, let alone three. I have tremendous respect for Coach Carter and his success. I think he will continue to find success at Inkster. Gardner, to me, seemed hampered all game. His groin may have been worse than thought, and I also heard he dinged his shoulder against DLS. One thing that Carter's teams have never been strong with: line play. Coach may want to go out and find someone who excels in teaching this skill. It would help his team immensely, and put less pressure on his skill kids to make all the plays. "The common man revels in HAVING WON. The champion finds his satisfaction in WINNING." - F.H. Yost

Carter is a decent coach, but not a great one. Getting to the championship games as many times as he has with Inkster in the upper Divisions proves the man is
a decent coach. He also proved it with his regular season schedule at dePorres.
I just think if Carter's teams are not winning the battles he hopes they can with his game plans then he isnt going to win. The man has never been a coach that can make adjustments. I disagree with the mileage excuse. I look at those Menominee teams that travelled all over the place during their back to back State Titles a couple years ago. It didn't slow them down at all.

I'd say Carter is average at best when it comes to X's and O's of coaching ... but he excels in other areas of being a head coach that enables him
to be successful at schools where many coaches fail. There are a lot of great X's and O's coaches that wouldn't have the same success Coach Carter
has had at a place like Inkster, as it was when Carter took over.... or even DePorres.
I don't really buy the travel part slowing Inkster down ... but I do buy that the opponents they had to face from week 1 to week 9 may have taken a toll..... home or away it was a tough season schedule for Inkster. |
