Without question this what a slight rebound year for the Central after a couple years of noticeable struggles. The Central again showed that each team can
be a tough out in the playoffs, and ultimately that is what decides the good programs from the bad.
A year ago I ruffled a lot of feathers when I stated that the CHSL was "Dead" as an elite football conference. It was met with calls of blasphemy
from the CHSL die hards. It almost makes me proud how much devotion was given to the CHSL that alone showed hope. I was happy to have my post help us slip
our way throug the boring off season months with fodder for discussion.
I was met by cries last year that I was only looking at the 2008 season when I was pointing out the weaknesses growing in the league. Of course I showed
statistics that pointed largely that this was a trend, and not a one year event. I also went out on a limb and pointed out how the economy might continue to
increase this trend. Amazingly some of these same people are pointing to this year as the proof that the CHSL has returned to it's glory days of the
90's. To that I would answer you can't just look at a one year picture and claim everything is alright. So in fairness what does the data show, and
what does the successes of 2009 mean.
First I think we need to honestly look at how much success we saw in 2009. The season ended with a very high note overall for the league 2 teams making the
state finals, only one other conference in the state the SMAC (who also had both win). Along with that we saw 2 other teams put up respectable runs in the
playoffs. Clearly the league peeked at the right time, and the value to that should be viewed heavily. So let's look at what each team did.
DCC....obviously the cream of the crop, and I think even the DCC group ranks this team up near the top in terms of the better teams in the past 20 years. We
all knew DCC would be good (although they were better than i expected) this senior class was raved about for four years, but it took some lumps to get here. 7
losses the last two seasons. DCC has shown since 2003 the pattern of good year, down year, good year down year etc. With this huge class leaving, is there
anyone in here that can honestly say this program will not take a step back next year? The question of course is how big of a step. DCC has not put back to
back 7 + win seasons together since 2002/2003. Hardly compares to the run of '87-'03 where only once they had less than 7 wins (6 in '94).
OLSM.....OLSM played well late, and had a very realistic chance of being a state champion. They salvaged a lot from what was a scary start to the season.
However, this is what I think we expected from OLSM after all they have a D1 QB. We also need to be honest had they not scheduled The Melvindale Academy of
Buisness and Tech they wouldn't have made the playoffs. Another scary thing about OLSM this regular season they lost as many games out of the league as
they did in league, for the second year in a row. OLSM is now 13-10 the last two seasons, and averaging 4 losses a year over the past 4 seasons.
Rice....The Rice team of the playoffs was not the Rice team of the regular season, Kudos to the coaching staff. The thing above all that stood out to me about
Rice was how unRiceish they looked on D this year. However, a closer look shows that 2008 was only slightly better. This is concerning for Rice it'll be
tough to be consistently dominant again this way. After 5 years in a row of double digit wins, and 7 or 8, Rice has now gone three years in a row without
breaking 8. Good thing for Rice they have not had a losing season since 1984. Although it is concerning the direction the record is heading. Here's to
hoping the momentum gained in the postseason will carry over to better things next year.
DLS....DLS was a tough nut to crack this year. They were not a bad team by any stretch of the imagination, but they clearly were not a top notch team as well.
The schedule was filled with bad teams, and good teams. They handled the bad teams on thier schedule but could not get over the hump against the quality
opponents they played. Even thier run in the playoffs was softer than what the other Central teams had to deal with. The good news for DLS is that we are
looking at 4 years in a row of winning records, and that's the first time since '93-'96. I'm not sure we should look at that as a huge trend
because of the coaching change that went on there.
U of D.....not much to say, coaching change was positive, hopefully more to come.
Without using the one year snapshot of U of D if we look at
DCC, OLSM, Rice, and DLS we see a total of 15 losses. (Keep in mind 0 from DCC on what many consider a crazy good team)
Now let's look at 2008 a year that many die hard supporters of the league claim was a obvious down year that we would like to quickly forget. The Central
had 14 losses.............what, what, what (to the tune of Kyle's Mom). We see the CHSL had more losses this past year than they did in 2008, the trend
might be continuing.
2009----15 losses
2008----14 losses
2007----13 losses
2006----12 losses
2005----12 losses
This is still cause for concern. While clearly the league was more competitive in the post season this year, the overall body of work is still something to
be worried about. With all the Central members seeing declining enrollment (except for DCC who is slowly rising agian but still behind highs of the early
2000's) I don't think it's fair to say the trend of the league has changed for the better....maybe just slowed. I leave you with this question,
what would we feel about the CHSL if OLSM had Detroit Southeastern instead of MAOBAT, and Rice had not gotten hot late?
