The EK Varsity job has been filled! A public announcement is forthcoming in the next few days. Out of respect for the AD and the staff, I will withhold the
name, however, I can tell you that EK fans will be happy with the selection! This guy knows football, kids like him, and he has a great track record.

I have known Blaine Brummels and the AD staff for years and years. I am not going to comment either way, as I gave my word that I wouldn't a few weeks
back. There are some sticky loose ends (behind the scenes) to tie up and then there will be an annoucement. Stay tuned...

I've read a little bit of what is on the mlive West board about the possibility of Coach Hudkins ...
And I find it hilarious that there are comments like "Wing-T, boring, yawn!, etc." ... One would think that EK fans would have learned their lesson after they thought WINNING with Shillito was BORING. If I were at EK fan, after winning 2-3 games a year and falling to the bottom of the OK Red running the "exciting spread offense" .... I wouldn't care if we EVER threw a pass again if it meant getting the program back on track! For EK Fans if this guy comes to town ...from what I hear Coach Hudkins can run a diverse offense when he has the talent. I remember under QB Audie Cole he threw for something like 1,700 yards in a season ... they do use wide receivers and run a lot of play action passes.

The problem at EK Searn is that Shillito left them over contract issues and some of those EK fans still harbor hard feelings. Because they do they take shots
at what he put on the field (the T). It is really funny to hear them say "oh the rest of the Ok red was catching up and figuring that offense out
anyways". Funny thing is in his last season he won 10 games AND the Ok red title that year. Not sure how "figured out" the rest of the
conference has it.
Another problem is (and this is more the fault of newspaper writers) everytime Shillito or Sigler's offenses were referenced in a paper they were incorrectly called the Wing-T. The offense is correctly called the Bay City T, as it was created by Elmer Engle while he was coaching in Bay City. The offense uses wing-T principles but is really not the true wing T. The new coach at EK will be bringing the Delaware wing-T which is the real wing T which is run by ALOT of succesful schools aroung the country (including Rockford). It is a very diverse and deep playbook (one of the deepest I have seen) and is very easy to adapt to whatever talent you have on hand. If the kids buy in and work hard EK should be just fine and end up looking alot like Rockford does now.

Mr. Searn - first of all, a few knuckle heads on mlive do not speak for the 7000 plus fans that come to the Falcons Stadium each Friday night. OR the 50
thousand plus citizens of Kentwood. My guess is, the guys on mlive are just kids with little or nothing else to do. They certainly do not speak for our
community. Secondly, as far as a wing t offense, IF we were to run one that would be okay with everyone I know. We loved John Shilito, and winning was great.
Having a running clock against Rockford was a dream come true! As I mentioned then, I don't approve of the way he left, but we had nothing to do with that.
That was a personality conflict and politics involving the Supertendent of schools, who also is the person responsible for bringing Ostepow to EK. Fortunately,
that person has retired and there is a new sheriff in town! The people that didn't like JS were the opponents that couldn't stop his offense. They
called it the no talent, boring offense. It was neither from our side of the ball. Remember Noel Alemans run at the Siverdome against DCC? That was talent ...
and determination. It is foolish for anyone to speak for an entire community, however, within the circles I run in having lived here 25 years and am actively
involved, the EK community will whole heartedly support the new coach and his staff. GO EK!!

BR, with the sportswriters getting JS offense wrong is it any wonder I had to have you 'splain the difference to me, back once upon a time?
EKDad, I think here on the East side of the state, most of us remember EK's team with fondness. I've said many times before, EK opened more than a few eyes when they took the opening drive and jammed the ball down a darn good CC defense's throat for the opening score. Also (and I would like Kaycob, Blue, Searn etc to correct me if I am wrong) but in what I take as a show of respect Coach Mach started running more similar plays with his incredibly athletic '03 squad. It peaked around the playoffs that year, and carried over a bit less in succeeding years. And BR again, you're right of course. Executions are not boring. |

Thanks Blue. See I thought they ran noticeably more fakes out of the backfield especially late in the '03 reg season. I took it as a look for other teams
to be aware of. On the other hand it is likely that I simply noted it more after watching EK the year before. And ya, the look definitely evolved from the
Tight T we saw almost every play earlier in the decade. Mach has had a full stable of RBs to fill that T most years. Do you think the lighter BF was a
reflection on his available talent? I note he didn't throw the ball more though....lol

EKDAD or anyone that knows...Is he hiring his staff over there or is he bringing his staff? The one thing I know, is that Hudkins is a very good offensive
mind..He will bring some excitement to EK...
The only thing he needs to do is find a good Defensive Coordinator...His teams were very well known as being on of the worst defensive teams in the entire Mega...Would give up tons of points regardless of talent...That is one thing to keep an eye on...With that said, I believe EK got themselves a tremendous coach and a good man... |

As far as I know, most of the staff has family/jobs in the Monroe area and I'm not sure they would uproot. Especially the varsity staff, who are fairly
established in the area. I would guess that few, if any, would make the trek to EK. Also, you're right about it being necessary to find a good DC.
They will be exciting offensively and good enough defensively to get EK back to respectability in my opinion. Again, if this EVER becomes official, it will be a big deal. |

I really think this could be a good hire for EK. Hudkins has been successful at both stops, and knows what it takes to build a winner. If I remember his time
at Clarenceville, he left because of lack of support from the administration (I'm sure Cville Trojans can comfirm or deny this). Sounds like EK
administration is giving him what he needs, so I like their chances to be competitive in what I consider to be one of the state's most challenging leagues.

TNT you're correct about CVille ...
In my biased opinion (and in a post which I am SURE will antagonize my man PrimeTime) I see it as EK making a commitment to improvement and doing what it takes to turn things around. Not a whole lot of schools in this state at this time are willing to do this kind of thing. His motivational skills and work ethic will turn it around there, no doubt. |
