Eastern forced to forfeit, coach suspended
Evening update
Eastern's first varsity football win since 2006 turned into a loss today, and the Quakers also lost their football coach and athletic director while the investigation into why continues.
The Lansing School District announced the Quakers used five academically ineligible players in last week's 34-20 victory over Detroit U-D Jesuit, and will instead forfeit. It was the first game coached by star alum and former NFL player Tommie Boyd, who has been suspended. Athletic director Mario Villarreal has been put on administrative leave.
Boyd was confident both Tuesday and this afternoon that his team would escape penalty after finding out Tuesday that up to six players were in question. One was found to be eligible after his grades were recalculated, and Boyd expects the same to happen for another by next week. He said he had no idea about the other four being ineligible, but also admitted he didn't monitor the eligibility list as closely as he could have amid trying to get the program on its feet after being hired in May.
The decisions was made after practice, with players' families expected to be notified by Principal Ella Dickson this evening. Assistant coach Richard Woods will serve as interim head coach.
"The kids that played I didn't know about, and I'll take the rap about it," Boyd said. "I've never once heard about anybody in the Lansing School District getting treated like this.
"I know I'm not the only one who should be dictating (eligibility)," Boyd added. "But I'm taking the fall for it."
All five players considered ineligible, including the one Boyd expects to be cleared, were dismissed from the team.
