One of the things I like least about Michigan football is when they recruit someone from Orchard Lake St. Mary's. It says something about their judgement and it requires me to make a decision--to root for or not root for the success of that player. In the case of Morgan Trent, there's no dillema. This guy is the worst DB in Michigan history. He can't cover. He can't tackle. Why RR doesn't stick him on the bench and end his career is a real indictment of the other DBs on the roster. I sure hope MSU wins the recruiting battle for Dion Sims.

Trent is a great Athlete fast, agile, tall. But he is not a football player, you saw that in HS and 4 years later he is no better.

You are correct with the name.
No offense intended, to either player. Just do not see him reading the pattern or being in the right spot all the time, that is a D1 defensive player. I see players getting to the ball after the play is made. looks good in practice but reacting instead of driving the play in games. U of M is playing way to many of Rich Rods guys and not enough of the upperclassmen. 18 year old kids are not going to match up with experienced D1 players accross the board. Freshman can be RB, WR on spot/situactional duty, something that relies on speed and not as much knowledge of game. Now to prove I am wrong with the last comment Mike Martin looks to be playing well and making an impact.

This conversation went sideways fast. OLSM is a very good school. Great education and history nice Campus and many good students and Athletes have come from there. I do not doubt he is a good student, an above average Athlete, just not a big time D1 DB in my mind. I hope Mich. continues to recruit good student athletes from any Michigan school, especially CHSL kids as I have a soft spot for the CHSL. In general I believe Colleges and HS for that matter get hung up on speed, and "the look" instead of can the guy play. Make a tackle and be around the ball. From a Athletes point of view and a parent, if they offer I accept great education free or at a reduced rate in College, and get chance to keep playing in college why would you not accept. Now the MSU / U of M debate I am a Wolverine fan first, but am very glad to see MSU getting a good coach and some quality local players making a difference. I can not say much this year U of M paying a heavy price for the switch to the spread, way to many Freshman playing and it shows in the inconsistency and mental mistakes. Hard to even think about talking smack for this weekends game the way the Wolverines look this year. For MSU sack they better win, U of M is God Aweful, showing signs of talent then falling apart all in the same quarter. That is a MSU trait Ouch

Did anyone hear Jim Rome rip Morgan Trent apart earlier this year they reported that he ran a 4.1-forty in practice?
Michigan is just following the Notre Dame pattern. Have a surprisingly great year (ND '05, UM '06) Followed by a year of high expectations gone unmet (ND '06, UM '07) Ending with one of the worst seasons you're school could ever have (ND '07, UM '08 - so far). Last January, a bunch of my friends and I were discussing this years season (when a campus loses power during the BCS title game, you gotta find something to talk about). I predicted ND would make bowl game, and UM wouldn't win more than 5 games, and I was told I was crazy... Everyone says RichRod just needs 'his guys' in there, and they'll take over the Big Ten...I don't know if it's going to be that easy. Meanwhile, ND is on the upswing, and can get 8 wins in a season many doubted them, led by a GREAT group of freshman and sophomores. GO IRISH and FIRE UP CHIPS! |

Oneman et al, I have not watched a lot of Trent over the years. But this thread brings to mind a question: It has been discussed that perhaps GP, while a good coach, is not a great coach, and has benefiited from the talent that olsm has *acquired. His teams' records in big games, even with that talent has not been great this decade. SO.....is this reflected in olsm players that have gone on to play at the next level? That is, have olsm players had good careers in college, or less than stellar ones? Broad question, I know, but in general. On the other hand, BBR alumni, Adam Decker and Charlie Gantt are having nice seasons for MSU. GoPilots, They told me I was crazy when I specified the only 4 wins ND would have last year too. I even called the Navy game. That said, when I am driving near the Detroit area I listen to Det Sports Radio. I think the guy's name is Garsh or Karsh (I can never tell which) and he stated that 69% of the offense WAS in fact frosh. (don't know if that was points, PT, or what) But based upon that and RR is playing his guys. There is another discussion on RR and his players over on the college threads of this forum too. And GoPilots? GO SHAMROCKS!!!!!! |

No .. I don't really believe that .. I think GP is a solid coach .. not great, not bad. Though I do believe on average since I have been following MHSAA football closely (since the mid 1990s) ... GP coached teams have in general ... underachieved.

As I have said many times - the 2000 & 2001 squads Overachieved in my opinion. Other years, did they underachieve, or were they Overhyped? Those DePorres
kids never won anything there even adding Grimes to the mix. One needs to remember that injuries are more difficult to overcome when you have less
student/athletes to start. (Enrollment). Now over 10% of OLSM enrollment is International Students and I cant seem to remember many playing the mainstream
sports. Lets not forget, OLSM opted to play up for 4 years. Now with that being said, GP is not a great coach, can anyone explain the lack of Sims in the
offense in last years State Final?

wow prepseer, and people still think you have credibility? i agree morgan trent is not a very good player but is it truly necessary to bash the whole school?
there have been a plethora of quality athletes to come from o-lake. david bowens, charles davis, grant mason, jermaine gonzales. just because one player got
over-hyped because of his speed doesn't mean that olsm is a bad school. that's a very unbalanced assertion.
i think olsm has a tendency to get over-hyped, mainly because people love to watch them "fail." and don't for a second tell me that's untrue. it's kind of unfair to the team. they could end up with a good season, but people say they under-achieved because of all the pre-season hype. it's stupid. p.s. adam decker is a very good player. but why did he insist his little brother go to olsm instead of rice? |
