I really hope this is proven to be FALSE.
IF it is true ... and they chose a player over an established coach ... I wont shed a tear if the Spartan program becomes what Churchill was in the 1990's. |

I just started a more generic thread on the subject in the KLAA forum. (Searn, combime them if you'd like).
Anyways, I am skeptical that any adult in this equation could allow a player to become bigger than the coach in a power struggle. However, if it IS true, I agree with Searn. You reap what you sow. |

If there's any truth to this ... I don't think it was a "me or him" type deal ... I doubt that would happen for one player going into a
senior season.
I could see this happening. Coach tries to discipline players and such ... parents/player go above the coach to AD, Admin, etc. ... and the discipline gets reversed..... and takes away any power the coach had. Coach is frustrated with the situation, feels like it's better to move on. Sound possible? I think so Did this happen? No clue. |

If all this is true, I have a lot of respect for Mr. Gabel. UD Jesuiit should grab him before some other school does.

Searn wrote:That sounds reasonable. But still in that scenario, it's kid against the coach and the kid won. The kid got some people to have his back, and got his way. Coach decided it wasn't worth it to continue as a power-less entity. Sad nonetheless for the program if it played out that way. |

this is so false it isn't even funny. coach gabel and austin have a great relationship. he stated at the banquet the other night that its not very common
to have a kid like austin and that austin is one of his all time favorite players. there is no way that this is true.

This is totally not true, and like rich said, is totally uncalled for and not remotely funny. If anyone here has ever had the opportunity to listen to the
extreme praise that Coach Gabel has given Austin, you would understand. The reason Coach Gabel quit was because "personal reasons" and "this has
been something that has been going through my mind for a while now". I also talked to him today and he said that he really has lost some of the intensity
and love for coaching because of the demanding schedule, and that he feels that the rewards are no longer worth the time.

Great to hear that was not the case ....
I bet we'll see Coach G. back coaching somewhere soon .... It seems like coaches that retire to "spend more time with family" or "personal reason" end up right back in coaching within a few years (tops!) |

IDK, some think that he was offered a position at a college but i dont think thats the case. i feel that he just lost the love for coaching and that he said he
will try to make the transition as smooth as possible. however, i would have thought that the ammount of returning starters, which is more than last year,
would keep him here for one more final run, but who knows........
