I'm sure ND had the same high graduation rates back in the glory days of football. That's what they should be striving for, as should all schools. I'm afraid, for most schools, we will never see that. Now that the semi-pro (or future pro) player has become the staple of college football, will schools ever go back to the days of the real student athlete. I doubt it. They will continue to reap millions from the football program and treat programs like kinisielogy as a "school within a school." When probably 5% of the football roster probably couldn't have been admitted to the school without football, it says something about college athletics today. Of course, I'm guessing on the 5%. At schools like Michigan, it might even be lower.

Maybe Mr. NCAA could run some numbers. Of course, privacy issues would preclude doing a real survey. But, information should be readily available on the GPA/ACT score that is required for admission of a non-athlete. How many players on the football and basketball team, excluding walk-ons, have those numbers. That's how I got to 5%. Even schools like Northwestern, Stanford, and, to a lesser degree, Notre Dame, probably couldn't hit the 5% level since they do need a certain core of good players to compete at their level. Now that I think about it, I'm sure most Ivies have fairly low levels since it is pretty well known that most of the better football players on those teams got help getting in.
