What are some good candidates for the 2009 Top 5?
Muskegon was the first team to come to mind .... I'm sure they will have some talent ... but will it be the same post-TA?
Any suggestions?

I came across this topic on a national board asking for the top 5 teams in each state .... I clicked to reply and kind of drew a blank ....

I'd go with Rochester Adams and Rockford as usual.
In no particular order...I guess... Rockford Rochester Adams Muskegon East Grand Rapids Inkster Grand Valley State - NATIONAL CHAMPS AGAIN! ('02 '03 '05 '06 baby!) ![]() |

I'm not quite so sure as Rochester Adams being a top 5 team. Clarkston returns more players than they do.

In alphabetical order: Strange alphabetic that you have: 1. Birmingham Brother Rice 2. Chelsea 3. Dearborn Fordson 4. Detroit Catholic Central 5. Inkster 6. Lake Orion 7. Rockford 8. Romeo 9. Saline 10. Sterling Heights Stevenson Plus I not buying some of these teams in the top 10. E. G. I had thought that Dearborn Fordson had lost quite of bit of their star talent. |

Sorry, NCAA. I started out doing it alphabetically, but decided to "go for it" and do a real Top 10. In the back of my mind was the reaction to
having BBR listed first, even though it was alphabetical. Some would have complained. Although it is way too early to do a Top 10 for next year, I think my
list isn't bad.

While I don't know if I would say top 5 I feel pretty confident saying that Dakota should be a pre season top 10 team. They have 12 starters coming back
next year which is much more than they have returned in recent years (6 in 06 4 in 07 and 6 in 08). From what I understand the entire varsity staff should
remain as is for next season as well. Also I saw the transfer from Det MLK at the BB game on Fri and he should be a solid contributor and has a good chance to
start.

Interesting on Sterling Hts. Stevenson .... do they have a lot returning ?
I know they have Fracassa for one more year, anything else to put them #1? Chelsea has Nick Hill ..... Saline has the new QB from Goodrich.... I have not decided if I like Brother Rice or CC better in the CHSL.... CC returns more experienced players, but Rice might still have more talented players ...

SHS will be loaded. In addition to Fracassa returning, they have WR, D.J. Mershman, a 1st Team All State Player as a Junior. They also have both running
backs and some good linemen returning. The key however is the Fracassa/Mershman passing combo. I think they will be the best in the state--even better than
Lowell's Nichol/Boss from this year. Mershman was a 1st Team All State player as a Junior. Fracassa doesn't have the recruiting stars of
Gardner/Bolden/Boisture, but he is an outstanding high school QB and has arguably the state's best receiver to throw to. Having both running backs return
doesn't hurt either.
As for CC and Rice, I think it comes down to to Rice offensive line. If they can fill the void left by graduation, I think Rice will end up better than CC, but it will be close. If Rice struggles on the O Line, I'd have to give CC the edge. Should be an interesting Week 4 game. CC will benefit from a stronger non-conference schedule this year. Rice should be better in the skill areas. The Popp/Martin-Manley passing combo is a lot like Fracassa/Mershman--not as good, but close. |

Prep while Fracassa and Mershman along with 1 RB (Justice Wright) return, SHS did lose arguably their best offensive skilled player #5 Thomas Beaurem. Beaurem
was the best player on the field the night SHS knocked off Dakota, he returned a KO for a TD, 1 TD rec, and an INT to set up a Fracassa to Mershman TD. Not to
mention he converted 2 3rd and 25+ draw plays for 1st downs in the second half. SHS will be very tough next year and I expect the MAC Red to come down to these
two teams, week 5 should be a great matchup.

I'm not buying Chelsea or Saline. This ain't basketball or baseball where one stud can make a great team. They'll both be good, but not top 10.

Thanks for the info 'seer ...
Sounds like Sterling Hts. Stevenson should be a legit Top 5 candidate. With SHS, DCC, Rockford, Lake Orion, Dakota,Livonia Stevenson (returns a lot of talent, coaching is a question mark) etc. .... is 2009 the year where D1 reemerges as the Top division in the state?

Thanks, I thought both RB's were Juniors last year. The MAC Red should be good next year with SHS, Dakota and Romeo. As far as I can see, the others will
be rebuilding and fighting for 4th place.

Searn,
I was also thinking this might be the first year in a long time where Div. 1 was stronger than Div. 2. |

Prep being a CHSL guy what are your thoughts on Merchant going to CV from Rice? (if it is true that he is the front runner for the CV job and would be
willing to leave BR). The CV program is still in good shape although they have been down in recent years, next year the transition should be interesting and
Merchant won't have to wait long for his first big game, week 2 @ Dakota. My MAC Red predicition would be:

I'm a fan of Merchant.
U of D Jesuit was about as low as it gets (kinda like U of D post Merchant) ..... and he made them a legit player in the CHSL. I believe it would be a good hire by Chippewa Valley. But would the CV people give him a chance?, it seems like they do not think anyone is capable outside the CV program or the MAC Red.

I was thinking the same thing Searn. If Merchant could win at UDJ he should be very successful at CV. I think the CV fans will give Merchant a chance, it's
just tough for them IMO to accept an outsider when the HC OC and DC at Dakota were all former CV coaches and Dakota has took it to them the last few years to
go along with the state crowns

I like Scott and feel that he would be a great hire for Chip. Valley. There are so many good football guys in the Rice family, he could be replaced without
much trouble. I'd prefer him to stay at Rice, but if he's ready to move on I wish him well. CV is a great program and would benefit from Scott's
experience. Not only did he turn UDJ into a CHSL power, he made it to the State Semi-Finals, before losing to, of all teams, Chip. Valley. I don't know
who he's competing against for the job, but CV could not go wrong with that hire.

On the Feb. 7th www.statechamps.tv show, Tom Markowski named Sterling Hts. Stevenson, Macomb Dakota, Warren De La
Salle, and I double check on OLSM being mentioned before DLS. I guess that this means BBR and DCC will be in 3rd and 4th places in the league.

I like Tom, gererally, but he didn't do his homework on OLSM. Apart from Bolden they have nothing coming back and a mediocre JV team. They should be able
to handle UDJ and DDC, but not the top three CHSL teams. I also think DLS, which Tom mentioned in passing, will not be at the level of CC and BBR. A lot can
change over the next six months (transfers, weight room, passing league) but that's how I see it now.

Mr NCAA wrote: I think Tom was asked the question and these were simply the first teams that came to mind ... I don't think I'm going out on a limb by assuming that if he were to write and article on this same topic there might be some other schools that come to mind when giving it more thought and research. At least from a preseason standpoint one would have to have Rice and CC as the top 2 in the CHSL ... obviously no one really knows what will be put on the field until the fall.... OLSM and DLS could very well end up playing for the CHSL title. ... but I don't think either team will be in Tom's "Super 10" to start the 2009 season.
