Jeff Putnam named U of D Jesuit Football Coach
Jeff Putnam, a Hall of Fame and State Championship coach, has been named the new football coach at University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy. Putnam brings an extensive resume to his new position, most recently leading Davison High School to a record seven straight Big Nine League Championships and three Class A Regional Championships in 2002, 2006, and 2008.
A 2007 inductee to the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association (MHSFCA) Hall of Fame, Putnam won a Class A state championship while leading Lapeer West in 1995. Holding an overall record of 159-77 over 22 years as a head coach, including 22-10 in the State Playoffs, Putnam has been named MHSFCA Regional Coach of the Year four times (1996, 2002, 2005, 2006).
"I happily accept the challenge to help resurrect the U of D Jesuit football program," said Putnam. "It will be an honor to mentor and coach quality young men and develop an outstanding football program in which alumni, faculty and students can all be proud. The more I learn about the Jesuits and the U of D Jesuit community, the more I'm excited to be a part of the school."
"We're very fortunate to have hired someone of Jeff's quality and expertise," said U of D Jesuit Athletic Director Mickey Barrett. "He will be a great asset in teaching and nurturing our young men in school and in life skills. We're very fortunate to have a Hall of Fame quality coach."
U of D Jesuit, an all-boys Catholic School located in Detroit, draws students from throughout the Metropolitan-Detroit area and holds an outstanding academic reputation. Putnam inherits a program that won Class A Regional Championships in 1999 and 2001 but has since experienced difficulty. Putnam resurrected programs at Lapeer West and Davison and built them into annual state championship contenders.
"In our search, we specifically looked for coaches who have resurrected programs and made them perennial powerhouses," Barrett said. "Coach Putnam fits this criteria perfectly."
