It should be another great year in the MAC Red as far as balance and some legit state title contenders. I would not be surprised if 5 teams make the playoffs again. I think Dakota and SHS will face off at some point during the playoffs(hopefully regionals rather than districts) and I like the winner's chances of getting to Ford Field, although MAC Red nemesis CC may be waiting to knock off the top Red team as they did so often in years past. Romeo and CV could be dark horse teams in the league. |

Romeo will certainly be in contention. They do have an advantage of playing Ford in week 2 then getting Dakota on their schedule in week 3 after the Cougars
biggest rivalry game vs CV. I think G will make sure there is not a let down/hangover from the CV game this year especially after what Romeo did to Dakota last
year.
I think Romeo's season comes down to the 4 week stretch of weeks 5-8 when the play CV,Cousino,SHS and Ike. Last year they went 2-2. |

Stevenson has got to be the favorite in the MAC Red. The apartments are full. They are returning their 5th year senior QB, and his favorite target,
Merchman(Sp?). They aslo picked up a running back off waivers, Corley, who was let go by Dakota due to undisclosed reasons. Well, actually, the only thing
undisclosed was Corley's weed during a surprise locker drug inspection. Look for Stevenson to be the favorite, but I like Dakota's strategy over the
years against Stevenson. Bring a lot of pressure, and get your hands in the face of the vertically challenged QB. I can easily see a one loss team winning the
league again this year.

DVI good assessment. BTW come around more often we need all the posts we can get on the MAC board. SHS probably has a class of recruits as good as the Joe
Alls, Mchael Tennessee/ Stiefel/LJ days. As you mentioned Bye desperate as ever to win that ring as his time is running out has even gone as far as to pick up
a RB from Dakota that was thrown out of school. I'm sure he has a lovely place at the SHS football dorms err King's Arms apts. The funniest thing is
that their best player hardly get's mentioned and that is 6'5 300 lb DT Carl Davis http://michiganpreps.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=98395

I say SHS but wouldn't be surprised by anything in the Red. SHS should have been at Ford Field last year and return a big time playmaker at QB.

I know that SHS was a favorite in 96 vs WLW. Searn I did not see this game or team but maybe you did. I heard SHS might have had their best team in 97 when SHS
had Alls and Tennessee in the same backfield. I heard they outplayed CC in the semi's, but up 17-14 in the 4th qtr Alls fumbled a punt deep in SHS
territory that lead to the game winning TD for CC?

ftballer67 wrote: In 1996 SHS was very good as well taking down an excellent Westland John Glenn team in the Semi Finals. When the matchup of WLW/SHS was determined it was pretty much a given that Stevenson and Bye would finally get it done. John Glenn had handed WLW an embarassing loss earlier in the year ... I believe it was 24-0, the embarassing part being that WLW's potent offense was somehow held to 18 total yards. Very impressive given the Warriors firepower on offense with one of the top 10 most dangerous high school players with the ball in his hands that I have seen in Michigan in WLW's QB/KR/PR Frank Stanford and Sophomore sensation FB Dave Johnson and shifty Scott Naz in the backfield. Anyway ... The Titans were able to outplay WLW for the most part but the game came down to big plays and opportunities(blocked punt for TD) ... If SHS would have fielded some teams like they did in the 90s in the later 2000's ... I think they could have a couple D1 crowns by now. 1997 may have been SHS's best team (that I recall). Also has to be one of the top 5 backfields I have seen with Joe Alls and Michael Tennessee. Vote for 2009 MHSAA Football Conference Winners New Conference Polls to be added throughout this summer. SHS the pick for MAC Red | #10 | ||
|
Another tough year in the MAC Red. It will be close with the possibility for upsets every week. If the Titans put together a solid defense, they will be
tough to beat, as that offense just has too many weapons. A key injury to any of the big weapons could derail the train in a big hurry. As far a big # 74
being the most over looked Titan, having seen every game he has ever played, he still has a lot to prove to me, to say he is a dominating player. He is a
load, but his technique and ability to play a lot of plays in a row at a high level must be questioned. He could not do it last year and heres to hoping he
has done his work over the summer. His preseason hype is based on two things- size and weight. Charlie Walker will be the playmaker on that defense, but
there are still a lot of questions about if they can stop some of these high powered offenses in the leauge.

First of all rhenson2000 let me welcome you to Searn's site and the MAC Board. Nice to see some new posters and fresh insight for the MAC board which is
still on the newer side. I'm a former player(99/00)/current fan of Dakota an it sounds like you are an SHS insider.... it would be great if you could
contribute your thoughts/game recaps on SHS and the MAC Red this year if you have the opportunity.
As far as Davis thanks for the insight. I guess I should have been more clear that I wasn't trying to say he was the SHS MVP only that he is by far there most talented and sought after player who does not get mentioned very often. Your criticism I'm sure has some merit and it sounds like he has some of the same loafing tendencies as the MI DT recruit Will Campbell did. With that being said when the kid is not gassed and motivated he is a difference maker on the inside. I'm sure his size and weight has something to do with his recruiting but there is no way that he get's 11 D1 offers without showing some serious talent and ability on tape and at camps. If it was just measureables then I see a bunch of goons that size every year that should be playing D1 football, there not though and that is because you have to display some strong talent to go along with that size to attract the type of attention Davis is getting. Interesting point about the SHS defense though. Sounds like they may have to win some shootout's along the way just like last year (Romeo,Dakota playoff game). Their biggest threat in the Red(Dakota) is the exact opposite. They are going to be very good defensively, IMO better than last year. The big question mark for them is whether the Cougar offense can return to it's 06/07 form.

Searn thanks for the recap on the 96/97 SHS teams. I'm curious though as to your comment about if SHS had fielded the team they had in the 90's in the
later 00's they would have won a couple a D1 crowns. Now is that because you believe the quality of D1/AA was much better back then than it is today? Also
how would you compare the Dakota 06/07 teams to the 96/97 SHS teams?

ftballer67 wrote: I do believe overall AA/D1 was tougher back before they expanded the playoffs. It seemed like back then a lot more teams used to play up a classification ... although they had a tough time making the playoffs due to the tough standards ... even power teams such as Brother Rice would have been Class AA come playoffs. While they made it fun come playoff time in the upper divisions ... there was not a balance ... the lowest Division (Class D) had far less teams competing to make the playoffs than the other divisions which was why you saw a team with a 3-6 record in the Class D playoffs late in in 1990s..... while teams with 8-1 records were being left out in upper classes. So while it watered down things in the upper divisions a bit ... it was a change that was necessary. When I first started following MHSAA Football ... It was rare that Class AA was not "king" ... While Harrison had some great teams while in Class BB and A ... from top to bottom there really wasn't a comparison. From CC to Troy to Sterling Hts. Stevenson to Fordson to John Glenn to Walled Lake Western and so on .... there were a lot of excellent programs excelling at the same time in Class AA. I'm not going to take anything away from Dakota's state titles (or Rockford's or other's) ... but I think in you took it back a few years ... Dakota's great teams would have been one of the bunch battling it out instead of being "the team" for a few years. Short and simple .... I'd probably take the best of the best out of SHS, CC, Troy, Glenn, WLW, etc. from the 90s over the D1 Champs of the 2000s if I HAD to choose. But it's hard to say any D1 Champ would not have held their own against anyone. Vote for 2009 MHSAA Football Conference Winners New Conference Polls to be added throughout this summer. It's funny that you mention WLW's best from the 90's. I honestly think our team in 99 would have had a pretty good shot at knocking WLW off if we
would have reached the finals. Now I know scrimmages don't translate into the games but we were physically superior to WLW at their 4 way that year and I
think with our QB and passing game we would have matched up quite well against there 4-6.
Who knows though we still would have had to get past Ike in the semi's which would have been a tough game. It's just tough to get over the fact that we had built a 28-14 lead over Clarkston in the 4th qtr and our defense couldn't slam the door and put them away. I played offense and I remember thinking there can't be that many teams that have ever scored on 7/8 possessions from the 2nd half on and our team's last offensive play of the game and lost. I guess those are the tough losses a program has to endure to learn how to take the next step in winning the wooden mitten. |

ftballer67 wrote: Ya, I don't think that scrimmage meant anything. I happened to be there watching that day. ... funny thing is I only showed up because I was picking up a pizza with a friend at Papa Johns across from the school and saw a bunch of busses pull into WLW ... and they said Chippewa Valley public schools ... so we figured CV was involved in the WLW scrimmage so it would be worth watching ... neither of us knew of Macomb Dakota and were a little disappointed it was not CV that was there. I walked away thinking I found a team (from a school that I had no idea existed, Dakota) that looked to be pretty good... and ranked them #32 in the Preseason rankings ... I'd bet I was the only one ranking Macomb Dakota at that time ... and that Walled Lake Western might be in for a down year. I didn't even think WLW looked very good against the other teams (which I believe were Jackson and Berkley) I think no matter what the CC/WLW winner was going to take D1 that season. Both were very strong ... and WLW played a perfect game against a banged up CC team. Vote for 2009 MHSAA Football Conference Winners New Conference Polls to be added throughout this summer. Yeah I remember being shocked when I saw that score(CC/WLW) in the paper. It seemed that many people that year had CC slated for a 3 peat and I remember we had
went to see CC in the Prep Bowl at the Dome vs Rice and CC looked very impressive(31-12) and finished off an undefeated regular season. I couldn't believe
they had lost let alone by the margain they did. I believe it was their top RB John Kava that was injured, but from what you said it sounds like he wasn't
the only one.
That was the same night we had upset CV in the districts, with CC gone, alot of us really thought running the table would be realistic. BTW I picked up TC Cameron's High School Rivalry book and it was pretty cool that he mentioned our upset of CV in the 99 playoffs as the catalyst for making the rivalry what it is today. Searn you were definitely the only one who ranked us that year. We were picked to finish 4th in the MAC White LOL! |

It was pure luck that I showed up that day ... otherwise I may not have known Dakota existed until late in the season or even the playoffs ...
CC was pretty banged up (Top 2 RBs were out, and other top players playing at about 70%) but WLW was an excellent team as they proved by finishing 14-0. It was basically an even game except for about a 5 minute stretch in the 3rd quarter in which WLW racked up some points 1. INT for TD 2. Fumble to set up FG 3. Fumble and return to inside 5 to setup TD I believe that was 3 consecutive possessions for CC. Other than that neither team could really move the ball. I will certainly add my two cents worth during the MAC Red Season and look forward to serious football talk on this board as opposed to the name calling and
sophomoric conversation that take place in other places.
