I think I'll go with the team that has won titles in 9 of the 12 years it's been in the Gold, including 7 of the last 8.

My thoughts exactly. It's kind of like picking against EGR in D3. Until someone other than EGR or in this case MC consistently wins in their
division/league the way these two programs do it's hard to pick against them.

What do you tkink of your guys this season? I know this is not the Red thread, but I'm picking the MAC Red to be nasty tough in 2009.

And I'll add that Clintondale is interesting in the Gold - Delano-Johnson is tough. But it was a very inexperienced Marine City team, struggling to find
its identity that split with the Dragons last season in two shootouts

I think Dakota is going to be very good and has a shot to win a share of their 4th straight Red title. They have 11 starters returning and return a QB with
game experience for the first time in 3 years. In years past(06-08) they have returned no more than 6 starters so this will be the most experienced team they
have had in a while. The Defense will be nasty again this year and from what I hear are going to play a 3-4 or 3-3-5 most of the season to maximize their
speed, bring pressure and to deal with the spread offenses in the Red especially SHS. The big question mark will be on Offense and whether or not they can be
more consistent than last year.
The Red while not most years will next year IMO have a chance to make a claim as the best league in the state. Dakota and SHS are legit state title contenders, Romeo will be a playoff team, CV could start to reemerge under their new HC and Ike is always in the playoff hunt. I think 5 make the playoffs and the Red will send someone to Ford Field next year. |

Homer,
I would add that clintondalle was also inexperienced in 08. No playoffs the year before, new offense, new defense. Johnson is the best QB in the entire mac and will be a WR in the real MAC next year. Mc loses their only playmakers from last year, the TE and Allemon. MC loses both if allemon doesnt have an out of body experience in the first game. The QB isnt heady enough and the o line lost quite a few if im not mistaken. Been in macomb for a long time and dont know if ive ever seen an MC D give up almost 90 in two games vs the same team.....AT HOME. |

FSU, I certainly give Clintondale a lot of credit, which is why I said they will be interesting. I just thought they lived and died by the speed of their
offensive backfield in 2008. While Johnson returning keeps some of that alive, they lost a LOT in that category from last year.
You are right about the MC D from last year, but it wasn't just Clintondale. The secondary of MC had serious problems stopping any team with speed last year (Sterling Heights' offense looked every bit as impressive against the Mariners' struggling D); I suspect you will see a lot of the returning offensive skill position stars playing D in 2009 to keep it from happening again. Scarcelli prides himself on the defenses he puts on the field and I don't think he was happy with what he saw last year. Johnson the best QB in the entire MAC? He's a great athlete, but I think you way overstate his QB skills with that statement. Fracassa had one of the best seasons in the history of Michigan high school football in 2008, and he's returning for SHS in 2009. I have a lot of respect for what Johnson does on the football field, but he does not compare to Jason F., in terms of being the top QB in the entire MAC.

Clintondale squeaking past Fraser? Is Fraser MUCH improved, or will this be a rough season for the Dragons?
I know one week doesn't really paint a clear picture of things to come, but based on yesterday's scores I'm inclined to form the beginnings of two opinions that I never thought I'd have: 1) Marysville may be the biggest hurdle to Marine City putting together another undefeated regular season; and 2) The MAC Silver may be a tougher league than the Gold. Am I crazy? Maybe those opinions will change after a couple more games...we'll see. |

Homer,
Fraser looked much better on offense and still only scored on one sustained drive (One big play before half on other). Clintondales D looks much faster than last year and the 6'5'' 260 lb shortstop, Walton, is playing DE/TE. Instantly getting big ten looks from what i heard in the stands. The offense was a bit sluggish in the second half but Johnson didnt look 100% and fraser was bringing 10 guys at a time to stop him. The offense will only improve as penalties literally killed every drive. This offense is much more ball control and balanced than last years explosivene one. I like hearing that MC's two best offensive players are two way starters now. And there is no way the 200 pound rb (per times herald) is tackling johnson one on one on the outside. I love how you mention a rough season for the dragons after squeaking out a victory on the road against a rival and immediatley mention MC going undefeated in the next paragraph. Especially since they needed 3 KO returns and a last minute goal line stand to win a game AT HOME. Yes, Fracassa is a better thrower but does he have a D1 offer on the table? Maybe he does but Johnson is 6'1'' 200 lbs running a low 4.4. |

FSUdawg-
I don't base much on week 1; it was a crazy week in the lower MAC divisions. I'm just saying that with the historical trends of these teams (especially the past 2-3 years) Fraser is nowhere near the team that Sterling Heights is. Based on that alone, and how easily Marysville beat Lincoln, I am inclined to be more concerned with the Vikings at this moment. Things could easily change after week 2 or 3. (EDIT: the rest of the Gold did not impress, wouldn't you agree? Other than Clintondale and Marine City, who looked even remotely good? That's the only reason I speculated about an undefeated season. Who, other than maybe Clintondale and Marysville looks like a potential loss on that MC schedule?) Johnson is a great athlete, no doubt about it. He is not as good of a QB as Fracassa, not even close. I don't care where they're going at the next level, they have opposite barriers from playing QB in D1 programs. Johnson's QB skills are not at the D1 level, but his athleticism is. Fracassa's skills are there, his physical presence isn't. No doubt that Johnson poses a lot of potential problems for the Mariners, but unless Fraser is about 100 points better than they were last season, that is a poor showing for Clintondale in week one. But it was week one, and Fraser may be vastly improved. Who knows at this point? I'd very much like to see a #1 and #2 finish by the "little guys" in the Gold again. Good luck to your Dragons.

homer,
Thanks and good luck to your Mariners. The 09 game should be quite different than the 08 battles, i'm guessing. I know that the Mariners almost put 70 on fraser last year but for clintondale, the Sterling game was easier than the fraser one, and SH was playing to get into the playoffs. Fraser's RB is a 200m dash record holder in macomb county and the QB broke Jim Sorgi's completion record last year. The 08 mariners struggled with SH and dominated fraser but the 08 dragons handled both quite easily. I just like the dragons speed vs the spread over the mariners speed. That 5 wide crap doesnt work against Sterling because they see it every day in practice. What they dont see is the old fashioned "T". Clintondale and MC have a tougher road than last year because both lost their biggest playmakers. Clintondale was lucky enough to replace last years TE/DE with an even bigger one Fracassa is a great passer but Johnson could be too, no one really knows. Neither are D1 QB material for the reasons you stated. I know johnson's uncle and he said that when Mike worked out with Andre Rison this summer, he told him that he couldnt be covered and was talking about Sundays some day. He owned Cass Techs big ten recruit Dior Mathis in 1 on 1's. The size i mentioned is bigger and faster than 2nd and 3rd year college guys. Johnson is a better all around player and the "best QB in the MAC" comment came from a highly respected MAC red defensive coordinator. Best thrower is Fracassa, best player is johnson. A guy who is a running and throwing threat is much tougher to defend than a guy who is primarily a thrower. Thank god its football season. |

Now I'm really lost with the Gold. I'm reserving judgment on what the L'Anse Cruese and East Detroit victories say about those teams. ED has 0 wins
in at least half of the past 8 seasons. I could chalk the Clintondale game up to an anomalous season for the Shamrocks, but I'd have to buy into the fact
that both ED and Fraser are having such seasons (which is possible, but much less likely). LC destroyed St. Clair, yes, but what does that mean? I'm not
sure; St. Clair hasn't proven they can beat anyone yet.
This division has me scratching my head. |

First off, Clintondale is struggling to find leadership. This years seniors, with the exception of Johnson, were just "role" players last year and
didnt need to step up because last years seniors did. The Juniors from this year appear to have know idea what goes into a 10-2 season and think that it just
"happens" because they won last year. The ED game could be a blessing in disguise and light a fire under the team.
LC looked good from what i hear. Someone said the FB is going to Central and the QB from last year is a good player. SC lacked speed and punch at the line of scrimmage. They appear to be worst than last year. I didnt see the game but a close friend did. LC and MC are the teams to beat in the Gold. Clintondale will struggle to get into the playoffs if the offense doesnt clean it up quickly. |

FSUdawg06 wrote:Well, you get a nice team this week against whom you can do some confidence building. A running clock against St. Clair might return a little swagger to the Clintondale team. But a loss, or even a challenging game from the Saints, and you can stick the fork in the Dragons. |

FSUDawg, I'm sorry it had to come against the team you support, but I was happy to see ED get a win. Hopefully they can climb out of the basement in that
league every now and again.

ftballer67,
It was definitely a good win for the Shams. This can happen when you have schools with double the enrollment of other schools finally getting "adequate" coaching. Big lineman and 1 great athlete can cause problems in a low scoring game. I dont want to get on my MAC alignment rant though (in short, punish the small successful schools and reward the loser big schools) lol. Embarrassing loss for Cdale but i think "everything happens for a reason". The team needed a couple humble pies. Atticus, I think you're 100% right. I checked out a practice this week and the Dragons have made some wholesale changes. Expect some different personnel tonight. Win and they get back on track, lose and its a wrap. Good luck to the Mariners against LC tonight, by the way. |

Not sure whats wrong with SC. I hear they seem to lack the athletes and toughness (even more than last year). Ever since that QB graduated a few years ago, the
talent pool at SC hasnt been the same. My guess is that they are losing kids to soccer. I dont understand how else a school with 1,000+ students and a history
of good coaching can be so down.
