Franklin-Stevenson Week 1 |
Lead | ||
|
Heck of a game for the kids from Franklin. The big uglies up front on both sides of the ball won this game for them. They shut Austin White down before he
could even get started. Huge win to start the season, way to go.

To be fair Pats, Franklin did not shut down Austin...Stevenson shut down Austin...I say that because of this
It never ceases to amaze me how coaches tend to out think themselves...Case in point, Austin White...You would think that a 3 year returning D1 starting runningback would be your horse..You would feed him the ball every chance you get...That did not happen..White touched the ball 15 total times..( running and receiving ).. They never gave him a chance to be "the man" when he is " the man " on that team....Their fullback #33 had more carries then him...And to be honest, he did a very good job..But he is not someone who can take it to the house at any time when you put the ball in his hands...So I just do not know what Gobel was thinking...Feed your horse..Dont play the "nice" guy and try and get everyone involved...Again, totally out thinking himself... With that said, Pats was right about 1 thing..The offensive and defensive lines of Franklin dominated Stevensons...That is where this game was won..They have a nice rb in #6..But really, they will only go as far as the lines will take them..They dont have any gamebreakers or flat out studs..But the are a hard working team and wont get out worked... I do not see either of these teams winning divisions...Both will probably be 6-3 and go to the playoffs...But to be honest, was not impressed with either team...I was honestly expecting more out of BOTH teams.... BUT, it is the first week of the year...Here is where you will see the big improvements.... |

Tommy, i agree with everything you just said. To add, i would have thought that Stevenson's o-line would have been better returning 3 starters, but i was
wrong. Bottom line is that they just got out played. Every yard White got last night was purley his. He looked great on the drive for the TD, expecially the TD
run itself. To add, i also said before the season that in order for stevenson to be a top teir team, their QB needs to step up and make plays to take the
pressure off of Austin White, however that didn't seem to be the case.

Tommy, you are right about Stevenson's full back. He had some nice gains. On White's TD, he absolutly ran over the safety. We were talking after the
game and were surprised that White didn't touch the ball that often. There were a few times he came off of the field winded though.

White never came off the field on offense or defense...He was off on punts, and kickoffs..

Somehow, I think there is more to this story. Would I be wrong in guessing that there might be a lot of friction between Austin White and his coach (and
possibly teammates)? Gobel is a good coach, so there has to be a reason he's holding the kid back.

I wasn't at the game because I had two-a-days up at college, so I can't post about it at all in my opinion. However, I played with Austin for three
years and I can say with 100% certainty that there is absolutely NO animosity between Austin and Coach Gabel. As for the number of touches Austin had during
the game, I can guess that a few factors influenced Coach Gabel's play calls.
First, as mentioned above, Austin isn't just an every down back anymore; he is an every down player. He is the renaissance man on Stevenson this year. Football, as I'm sure all of us are aware, is a grueling sport, and even a nationally ranked player will get tired if they almost never leave the field. I think that Coach Gabel is a very smart coach and I think he understands that while Austin is a great player he isn't a machine. He knows that if he gives Austin the ball two to three times for every set of downs he will become less effective at the other positions where his talent is required. Now, the obvious reply that most of you will make is that he can have other players fill Austin's spot on defense, but unfortunately one of Stevenson's major losses from last year is depth. Even when he is tired Austin is more valuable on offense AND defense than any of the players behind him. Second, Coach Gabel has always tried to run a balanced attack in order to keep defenses honest. If he was to give the ball to Austin as much as all of you suggest teams would put eight or nine men in the box, making it next to impossible for any sort of running game to be successful. In response to this you will probably reply that if a team loads up the box Gabel should just pass, but unfortunately Stevenson's two greatest losses (in my opinion) were their QB (Jake Gudeman) and leading reciever (Wade Stahl). The personell on the depth chart doesn't allow for passing to be the first option. So, Coach Gabel is stuck in a dilemma; if he takes Austin off the field on offense or defense it will hurt the team. Remember, this is only my opinion, but its based on three years playing for Coach Gabel at Stevenson. I have faith in him though. He ALWAYS finds a way to win, and I know that he will lead Stevenson to a recovery from this loss. |

And to the point of him playing defense...He could have been taken out as he was a non factor there...The main reason being is that Franklin did not pass much...And to be honest, both of us know that he is not a great defensive player either...He is an offensive stud..And for them to win, he has to be a horse...He should touch the ball 30 times a game...Mix between rush and pass...JMO... One last thing..I was stunned that they rarely ran out of the I...I know Stevenson has that package and has used it well in the past..But for some reason, they did not use it...IDK |

I HAVE FOUND IT! | #9 | ||

I watched the film of the game (finally) and have come to my conclusion as to why Austin was ineffective running the ball. The offensive line played HORRIBLE.
They didn't open up holes, they closed down their own splits (not an exaggeration at all watch the film). I seriously was surprised to see how out of
shape and weak the O Line looked on film because Coach Shaw always prided himself on his linemen. Huge shock to me...
