I hope you're right Rip. I think Dakota needs to control the tempo on offense, and their defense needs to survive the first couple of SHS drives and not let Fracassa and co get off to a quick start, if that happens I like Dakota's chances. |

Game Preview
Offense ppg Dakota 37.8 SHS 41.5 Defense ppg Dakota 7.5 SHS 17 Avg margain of victory Dakota 30.3 SHS 24.5 Both teams have very good QB's. Fracassa is on pace to break a few state records and is the odds on favorite to win Macomb County player of the year. He has struggled with Dakota in the past posting a 1-3 record in 4 starts. Mark Morris is having a great year for Dakota, the reps he played last year have benefitted him greatly. Look for both to make some big plays in the passing game. Explosive receivers for both squads as well. DJ Mershman and Marcus Beaurem for SHS, Gerald Jackson and Jordan Gay for the Cougars. Both have very good RB's but with much different styles. Brandon Hughes for Dakota is a power runner who punishes the defense but can break a big run as he did against CV for a 79 yard TD. Justice Wright for SHS is a home run threat everytime he touches the ball with his speed and athleticism, not sure about his short yardage/power game. Wright is also a very good receiver out of the backfield. The O lines are both very good as well. SHS returns 4 starters from last year who pass protect very well. Dakota returns 3 starters and IMO are the biggest (287 lb avg.) and most physical O line in the county. SHS has some very good individual talent on the defensive end in LB Charlie Walker, DT Carl Davis, DT Corey Stone and LB Jon Sulek. This unit has given up some large point totals to Ike and GPS though, and their ppg defensively is not up to par with their offensive output thus far this season. Dakota's defense looks to be even better than they were last year. Bryce Watts, Josh Wixson and Jason Byers will have to get a solid pass rush on Fracassa, and contain him when he rolls out of the pocket which he will do often. Dakota's secondary will be tested early and often. Coach Baur always does a good job of mixing up the coverages. Gerald Jackson on Mershman will be a fun matchup to watch. |

ftballer67 I may be going down with some other Lake Orion students...have you noticed how early the Dakota student section tends to fill up? Or should we all go in the Stevenson student section and wear Jeff Heath shirts |

I like your Heath jersey idea better.
Dakota's side will fill up pretty quick, it's not nearly as large as SHS's home side. But your more than welcome, just get there early. Who do you think wins? Who are you rooting for? |

I think Dakota wins in a moderately high scoring game, something like 27-24. Should be a great game, but I just think Dakota is a little better this year.
And really...this is just like Lake Orion vs. Clarkston in that the teams will probably play a much more important game later on. But in the meantime, I may
as well skip what should be a Lake Orion blowout win to see how good Stevenson and Dakota are. Lake Orion will probably have to play one of them in the
quarterfinals yet again (if LO makes it that far).
Since I'm skipping the Lake Orion game, I'm hoping it's a good game but I'll end up rooting for whatever side I end up on. On another note, do you happen to know why the MAC put all of these good rivalry games in the early/middle part of the season? |

I said SHS would win a state title in 2009 as the score of the LO v. SHS game was being announced. I'm sticking with my pony but can say I am less than
confident with my pick in this game.

I have no idea how the MAC chooses to schedule individual games during specific weeks, only the general scheduling format is what is clear to me. It doesn't make any sense to have some of these huge games that early in the season. IMO week 9 should be Dakota/CV and SHS/Ike. |

Another interesting stat. If MaxPreps is correct, SHS has not scored any points in the first qtr. this season. I was shocked to see that. According to MaxPreps
both teams best qtr. for scoring points has been the 2nd qtr.

SHS Scoring | #11 | ||
|
Thats not correct I have been to 3 of the games and they scored at least twice in the first quarter every game. With the exception of the of the Eagles game
the first string hasn't even seen much of the 4th quarter. They could have easily ran the scores up in most games.

S.H. STEVENSON 28, MACOMB DAKOTA 21On a night Jason Fracassa became the most prolific passer in state history, the Sterling Heights Stevenson senior quarterback had to fight for the spotlight.
Fracassa wasn't actually fighting for the spotlight; he was more than happy to share it with some teammates who rarely get their names in the
paper -- defensive linemen.
"Our defense stepped up to the plate," Fracassa said. "They went at their offense hard." It was only fitting that as the clock wound down toward zero Friday night, the defense recorded sack No. 10 in its 28-21 victory over Macomb Dakota before an overflow crowd at Stevenson. The victory cements Stevenson (5-0) as No. 1 in the state, which is where Fracassa is in the record book among players in this state who have thrown a forward pass. Fracassa, who completed 17 of 32 passes for 273 yards, increased his career total to 7,559 yards, eclipsing the record of Farmington Hills Harrison great Mill (The Thrill) Coleman, who wound up with 7,464 yards when he finished his career in 1989. "It's a great honor," said Fracassa, who at 5-foot-9 is about the same size as Thriller. "I've been working out with Mill Coleman my whole life. I'm sure he's pretty happy because I broke it. He's proud of me." Under normal conditions, all you would read about today is Fracassa, but the Titans' defense was terrific in harassing Dakota junior quarterback Mark Morris, who is pretty darn good in his own right. Morris was 16-for-25 for 173 yards, and he also had several key gains when he was flushed out of the pocket. But most of the night he wound up under a Stevenson lineman. "We had packages of five- and six-man blitzes because we knew we had to pressure him because he can run, too," Stevenson coach Rick Bye said. "We couldn't give them a lot of time to throw -- their receivers are too good." Dakota (4-1, No. 4) was supposed to steamroll over the Stevenson defense, but the Titans played excellent run defense and then rushed the quarterback like
maniacs.
"We had 10 sacks?" defensive end Kyle Kimball asked incredulously. "Wow! I think we came together as a team today." Kimball had four sacks -- two solos and two combos. He is 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, which certainly isn't small, but he gave up more than 70 pounds to the tackle playing across from him. "I was ready for the big guys," Kimball said. "I was able to handle them and move them around. I used my speed. I beat them off the line." One of the key moments came early in the third quarter after Dakota had pulled to within 21-14, when Ryan Spicuzzi returned the second-half kickoff 96 yards for a score. The Cougars stopped Stevenson on downs and forced a punt, but tackle Carl Davis and Kimball broke through the line for a sack and Davis forced a fumble, which end Demetrus Heard recovered. "The coaches were really buckling down on us on the sidelines, telling us what to do," Kimball said. "They had me fake outside and rip inside to confuse the tackle, and I got a combo sack after that." Kimball and his teammates were also able to share the spotlight with Fracassa, and the spotlight will remain their property ... until these teams meet again in the state playoffs. |

http://www.detnews.com/article/20090926/SPORTS05/909260364/1049/Stevenson-sacks-Dakota--28-21
Friday's top game: Sterling Heights Stevenson 28, Macomb Dakota 21Stevenson sacks Dakota, 28-21Tom Markowski / The Detroit NewsSterling Heights -- On a night Jason Fracassa set the state record for career passing yards, he had to share the limelight with a defense that collected 10 sacks. Fracassa threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another Friday to lead Sterling Heights Stevenson to a 28-21 victory over Macomb Dakota in a Macomb Area Conference Red Division game at Stevenson. In what was billed as the game for the state's top ranking, Fracassa and Stevenson's defense left no doubt which team was No. 1.
Mill Coleman of Farmington Hills Harrison (1986-89) completed his four-year career with 7,464 yards. Fracassa needed 178 yards to pass Coleman and
now has 7,559 yards with four regular season games remaining.
"Coming into the game the record was not that important," Fracassa said. "Now I (broke it record) I can't get the smile off my face. I'm usually the last one to leave practice. I work extremely hard. I might not play football after this season. Sometimes you have to give a chance to a player like me." Fracassa stands 5-foot-8 and weighs 170 pounds, but no one stood taller on the field. He accounted for all three touchdowns in the first half as Stevenson took a 21-7 lead. He was 13-for-21 for 216 yards in the half as Stevenson (5-0, 3-0) controlled most of the play. Dakota (4-1, 2-1), which came in ranked No. 2, gave Stevenson quite a scare in the second half. One big play that went against Dakota might have turned the tide. Ryan Spicuzzi returned the second-half kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to pull Dakota within 21-14, and when Dakota forced Stevenson to punt without a first down the momentum was clearly with the visiting team. But Stevenson's defense, in particular its front four, made perhaps its biggest play to stop Dakota. On a third-and-6, tackle Carl Davis stripped quarterback Mark Morris of the ball and defensive end Demetrus Heard recovered at the Stevenson 46 with 7:13 left in the third quarter. Six plays later Justice Wright ran 33 yards for a touchdown and Stevenson regained its 14-point cushion, 28-14. "We stepped up," Davis said. "We're trying to get it rolling. We have a quick defensive line, real quick." Fracassa gave kudos to his linemen. "This was their biggest challenge," he said. "They weren't supposed to be anything special coming into the season but they're proving people wrong." Dakota failed to score on its next possession. Morris' fourth-down pass to DeAndre Smith was caught but Smith was just beyond the end zone when he got possession. Dakota coach Mike Giannone thought Smith was in and his receiver told him so when he came to the sideline. "From our angle he was in," Giannone said. "You could see the Stevenson players' reaction, too. It was like he was in." Dakota bounced back from that play. Smith intercepted, giving Dakota the ball at its 37. Five plays later Spicuzzi scored on a 28-yard run to bring Dakota within 28-21 with 8:40 remaining. Dakota had one more chance as it moved inside Stevenson's 20 but a fourth-down pass was incomplete with 1:23 remaining. "This means a lot," Stevenson coach Rick Bye said. "But we told them before the game that the season doesn't end tonight with a loss and doesn't end with a win." |

By Fred Costello, Special to The Macomb Daily
The thousands of fans who packed Runkel Field on Friday night had to be expecting an epic football game. What they got to witness was one of the most
memorable gridiron clashes of the season. Host Stevenson, the state's fourth-ranked team, outlasted No. 3 Dakota by a 28-21 final, in a battle between
