Is Clarkston the best team in D1....? After pounding Dakota like they did, they deserve to be in the conversation...I guess all of the teams deserve to be in
it..But I dont think anyone has ever said Clarkston should be considered the best in D1...Maybe Mr.Ncaa did as he follows them closely...

I lean no, but you're right, they're definitely right there. I think most people looked at a likely final 4 of DCC, SHS, Rockford, and "team
4" as being there by necessity. I think Clarkston is proving they deserve consideration as being capable of winning it.

While watching that game last night I couldn't help but think I was seeing a contest between size and athleticism. Clarkston just plain out skilled the
much larger Dakota team. The Wolves O-line, giving up a good 40 pounds a man, used footwork and seal blocks, giving the quick and crafty Tyler Scarlett (great
QB name BTW) that tiny split second he needed to shred the Dak D.
I came to the game knowing nothing about Dakota, except their rep. My first impression was, Wow....Big! But I left seeing a team that I suspect easily bullies less athletic teams than the Wolves, with their size, but really only has 3 skilled athletes on the team....a trio of Jr's sure to keep them in the hunt next year. QB Mark Morris, a kid with an immature arm but great feet and field vision, is a surefire player to watch. RB Brandon Hughes can run like a snowplow, yet still move laterally to find a crease most impressively for a big back. And Deandre Smith, a dual threat, their only real receiver and the only reason Clarskston had to be cautious in their passing game. Still, to call the Wolves the states best, I would have to see them play someone with size equal to Dakota but more depth athletically....can anyone say CC? The 14-17 Clarkston halftime lead, hinted towards a barn burner. But the Wolves intermission adjustment was one that accentuated their athletic superiority, as they infected Dakota with Scarlett fever, turning their the six foot senior loose. Behind some of the slickest David vs. Goliath O-line play I've ever seen, he found well timed seal block creases play after play that had the big Cougar fellas spinning in circles. At one point early in the third, he had run 5 keepers in a row, picking up a couple of first downs. The frustrated Dakota D, packed in tight and focused on the QB, who rolled, stepped towards the Dakota onslought, took two deft steps back, and chucked a bomb to PJ Lannon (I think thats who it was) and Dakota was effectively finished. If Clarkston could borrow just 3 or 4 of those Couger bigs, they might easily be the states best. But I think they are going to see somebody as big and more athletic than Dakota, before long. I hope they do well, they are a fun team to watch. |

I think they are definitely in the discussion. I saw a well balanced team on offense. Scarlett is the best dual threat QB I have seen this year. The defense is
undersized but very tough. They did a nice job applying pressure on Morris.
Dakota, much as they have been all year was inconsistent last night. They played well in the 1st half and then came unglued in the 2nd. The O line had trouble again with the blitz of a more athletic front 7. Turning point in the game. Late in the 2nd qtr, tied at 14-14, DHS' Brandon Hughes had a 65 yard TD reception called back on a holding penalty. After a muffed punt snap by DHS, CHS took over with good field positon and got a FG to go up 17-14 @ the half. After that CHS scored 21 unanswered points in the 2nd half. |

A lot of us went into 2009 claiming that D1 will finally reclaim power in Michigan ...
I think we were more than correct. There are some excellent teams left in the D1 playoffs ... we'll see what happens! |

Wow, I just read Scarlett's statline. 225 yards rushing. 151 yards passing. 3 TDs.
If CC and Rockford both win today, I would be curious to know when the last time D1 had 4 undefeated teams in the Final 4. I'm not sure that has happened since the playoffs expanded. Talk about some heavyweight matchups. It's almost like the NCAA Final 4 a few years back with four #1 seeds. |

I was thinking the same thing last night .... But decided not to bother researching until we see what happens in the games today.
but I can't think of a year off the top of my head ... I thought of a couple years with three undefeateds. |
